Epic Hero Traits The Hero: is introduced in the midst of turmoil is not only a warrior, but a polished leader is smarter than everyone else, generally the problem solver has larger than life qualities, possibly supernatural powers defeats monsters and/or fights gods often stands alone in battle usually has good on his side possesses heirloom weapons with distinctive power and size. must undertake a long, perilous journey, often involving a descent into the Underworld, which tests his endurance, courage, and cunning.

Heroic Cycle

The Call to Adventure • The Call invites the hero into the adventure • It offers an opportunity to face the unknown and gain something of physical or spiritual value • Hero may choose willingly to undertake quest or be forced to take the journey • Often, there is a guide or a helper throughout the journey

The Threshold • The threshold is the “jumping off point” for the adventure – where it officially begins • Once past the threshold, the hero enters the unknown, a world filled with challenges and dangers that he must confront. • The hero begins to understand that even though he has a helper, the quest must be achieved on his own

The Tests • A series of challenges and temptations that the hero faces • Throughout the tests, the hero needs to know the difference between helpers and tempters – those who want him to achieve and those who want to pull him off of his path by using fear, doubt, or distraction

Into the Abyss (Lowest Point) • The greatest challenge of the journey is faced • Hero must face his greatest fear alone • After the hero conquers the Abyss, transformation is complete. • Normally a revelation is reached – a dramatic change in the way the hero thinks or views life

Atonement • Hero becomes “at one” with his new self • Hero incorporates the changes caused by the journey and becomes fully “reborn”

The Return • Final stage of the hero’s journey – return to everyday life • The hero reflects on his new skills and awareness and becomes richer or stronger
