HOLOCAUST • Hitler’s Final Solution: Nearly two-thirds of European Jews were exterminated, 6, 000 • 8 million total were exterminated (Communists, people who were disables, homosexuals, POWs, and more) • Causes: • Anti-Semitism • Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s problems

EVENTS LEADING TO EXTERMINATION • Jews lost their German citizenship • Jewish businesses were destroyed- Kristallnacht • Jews sent to ghettos concentration camps extermination camps

WAR AT HOME • 16 million served in the Army • 150, 000 women volunteered • Citizens had to ration food, rubber, gas, etc

WAR AND MINORITIES • Racism still existed- Defense industries would not hire African Americans • Executive Order 8802 - banned discrimination in hiring, but discrimination continued. • Bracero Program- US imported temporary workers from Mexico to work on farms. 200, 000 workers came to the US. Suppose to receive fair wages and living conditions, but that did not always happen. Contributed to illegal immigration • Native Americans also served in the military. Military used code based on the Navajo language

WAR LIMITED CIVIL RIGHTS • Executive Order 9066 - US government arrested and relocated anyone deemed dangerous to the nation • Affected Japanese, German, and Italian Americans • Individuals placed in Internment camps

WAR ENDS • Allies bombed German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, and Dresden • April 30 1945 Hitler commits suicide • May 8 1945 V-E Day Germany Surrenders
