Environmental Science
Environmental Science • What is the environment? –? –? –?
Environmental Science • What do you know about the environment? –? –? –?
Environmental Science • What is the single most important issue facing the future of the environment? –? –? –?
Environmental Science • Environmental Quotes… • “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ” Native American Proverb
Environmental Science • There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed. • ~Mohandas K. Gandhi
Environmental Science • It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!. . . a 1970’s television commercial
Environmental Science • Environmental Definitions –Global Warming • is the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades.
Environmental Science • Environmental Definitions
Environmental Science • Environmental Definitions –Greenhouse Gases • The gases in the atmosphere that act like a “greenhouse” trapping sunlight reflected off the earth’s surface and are responsible for raising the average global temperature. • These include: Carbon Dioxide (CO 2), Sulfur Hexafluoride (SO 6), Methane (CH 4), Nitrous Oxide (NO 2), Ozone (O 3) & Water vapor

Environmental Science • Environmental Definitions –Fossil Fuels –Any prehistoric organic matter that is used for fuel in today’s world. Includes: Coal, oil & gas. •
Environmental Science
Environmental Science • Population Growth
Environmental Science • Fossil Fuel Consumption: –At the start of the century, (1900) America had only 8, 000 cars and 144 miles of paved roads. –As of 2002 there were 140 million cars in the U. S. (roughly one car for every two people) –Using an average of 12, 000 miles per year and a mpg figure of 19. 1, the amount of CO 2 put into the atmosphere by just one automobile is about 11, 148 pounds per year
Environmental Science • Fossil Fuel Consumption: –And, that is just the United States. –There an estimated 590 million automobiles worldwide. –Roughly one car for every 11 people –Also, these are just passenger vehicles. It does not include transportation vehicles. • Trucks, buses, diesel locomotives, boats, planes all do not have any environmental restrictions on pollution. • …none…zero…null…zilch…zip…nada
Environmental Science • Fossil Fuel Consumption: –What happens when you burn fossil fuels? –Burning produces Carbon Dioxide. • Coal produces the most • Oil is second • Natural gas is cleanest, but still creates CO 2 and water vapor
Environmental Science • In 1958, Charles Keeting suspected a relationship between an increase in temperatures and CO 2 levels and began taking daily samples of the air. • He chose the top of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii
Environmental Science •
Environmental Science • That is approximately 380 CO 2 molecules for every 1 Million air molecules. • CO 2 levels during the last ice age were only at 180 ppm
Environmental Science • By using ice core samples in Antarctica, scientists have been able to measure temperatures back 650, 000 years. • At no point in 650, 000 years has the CO 2 concentrations been above 300 ppm.
Environmental Science
Environmental Science • So what?
Environmental Science
Environmental Science • Computer models suggest a 5 temperature rise by the end of this century. • It will be hotter than it has been in 30 million years. • Not warmer than it has been in human history, but warmer than it has been in primate evolution.
Environmental Science • The average temperature worldwide is about 58 F • An increase in 5 actually means an increase of 12 at the North Pole.
Environmental Science • Who cares about the North Pole?
Environmental Science • Increase in global temperatures will cause your life to change. • …And, it is happening right now!
Environmental Science • Upsala Glacier, Patagonia
Environmental Science • Qori Kalis Glacier, Peru
Environmental Science • Larsen B Ice Shelf
Environmental Science • Larsen B Ice Shelf
• As Arctic ice melts, sea levels are anticipated to raise 20 to 30 feet.
• Eastern Seaboard at night.
Environmental Science • As the seas heat up, it is estimated that the frequency and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes will significantly rise.
Environmental Science • Major storms in both the Atlantic and Pacific since the 1970 s have increased by 50%
Environmental Science • A few weeks after Katrina, Hurricane Rita in 2005 was the strongest hurricane ever recorded.
Environmental Science • Hurricane Katrina caused over 1 million refugees. • Because of the increase of storms and flooding, scientists estimate that there will be over 150 million refugees in the next several years in low-lying areas.
Environmental Science • Of the 20 hottest years on record, 19 occurred since 1980. • 2005 was the hottest summer on record.
Environmental Science • July 27, 2005, Newark, NJ hit 101 F, a new daily high. • July 19, 2005, Las Vegas, NV hit 117 F, tying all-time record. • Tucson, AZ tied its record of most consecutive days at 100 F: 39 days.
