Environmental issues in the philippines HANZ
Hello! I am Hanz Bruno 2
Philippines is located at South East Asia. It lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire that is prone to earthquake and one of the plates on Earth resulting volcanic eruptions. It is also surrounded by large bodies of water including the Pacific ocean where most of the world’s typhoons are made. The country is facing numerous kinds of environmental disasters including pollution. Illegal mining, dynamite fishing, global warming and climate change. 3

1. Wrongful actions 5
How? and the impact. Deforestation - The forest cover of the Philippines dropped from 705 to 20%. Illegal logging in the PH is very common resulting in landslide and flood damages in some areas from typhoons. Their wants impacts them very badly, killing thousands of people. Illegal Mining - An activity without state permission and license. From this activities they do, it will create a huge damage and impact on some areas if an earthquake or a volcanic eruption might occur. Dynamite Fishing - Fishermans sometimes do this for survival, They bomb the ocean to kill fishes igelally. The toxins and chemicals from the bomb will spread to the ocean leaving the excess substances behind. 6
2. POllution 7
How and the impact Disease -Because of pollution, there will be likely a natural disaster that might occur in the Philippines. For example, when there’s a typhoon, it will flood the country, all the wastes and dirt will mix in to the water. Usually when people see a flood, they tend to just got through it and swim but the water is dirty, therefore spreading it to people. Poverty - When the Philippines pollute, they just throw their garbages in an area where houses with people are located. When others also can’t find a job, they go to dumpsters and find things they can recycle to make money. Since, the landfills are getting bigger, more and more people are losing their home and earning more poor environmental jobs. 8
3. Climate change 9
How and the impact - In the Philippines, they don’t have a set place for landfills, so they just put it to a place where there’s poverty and a good place to blend in because they won’t really care about them anymore. One way they reduce garbages is burning them, yes that would help but it won’t help the atmosphere and Earth. These conditions creates climate change in the country, people are starting to feel the heat. Because of extreme heat, people will likely drive rather than take transit because of the air conditioning in provides. Then the smoke and gases will add more damage in the atmosphere. The ozone layer would become thin in that area. The nights would be colder and days would be hotter. 10
Solutions The Philippines came up with the Sustainable Development Strategy. The nation for the Sustainable Development Strategy includes assimilating environmental considerations in administration, apposite pricing of natural resources, conservation of biodiversity, rehabilitation of ecosystems, control of population growth and human resources development, inducing growth in rural areas, promotion of environmental education, strengthening citizens’ participation, and promoting small to medium-sized enterprises and sustainable agricultural and forestry practices. One of the initiatives signed in part of the strategy was the 1992 Earth Summit. 11
Church’s position - Pope Francis said that destroying the environment is a sin. The church said that we are making Earth into a wasteland full of debris. It is calling for an urgent action towards preventing climate change, pollution and global warming. The church is asking everyone to reflect to the society that lacked concern for the destruction of nature. He called for consumers to modify their modern lifestyle by reducing waste, planting trees, separating rubbish and making more use of taking the transit. The church stated that “Repaying mother nature would require treating the environments of poorer nations with care and providing the financial resources and technical assistance needed to help them deal with climate change and promote sustainable development, ” 12
My viewpoint - For me personally, I believe that we should take care of our environment because if we keep doing like these things, our time on Earth would be closer to an end. People are being unjust and selfish because they care more of the wants rather than the needs of each other. In order to achieve common good, we have to take care of each other and the environment to prevent disasters from happening in the world. Right now is the best time to take action and spread awareness as based on studies, Earth very close into becoming a very polluted planet. Humans will get extinct. The future generation would not experience the nature and likely be man made stuff. We are not born to pollute the Earth but to take care of Earth. 13
