Environmental Health and Safety Basic Fire Safety Training for Minors (2016 -2017)

Environmental Health and Safety Why This Training New York University’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety welcomes you to the NYU campus. We want you to have a wonderful experience on our campus, and want you to be safe while learning. This training is provided to help you become aware of basic fire safety. The Fire Department of New York is one of the regulatory organizations that helps set safety standards. NYU complies with all safety standards that are established by governmental institutions. At the conclusion of this training, please speak to your Supervisor should you have any questions.

Environmental Health and Safety Your Responsibilities Participate in fire drills. Identify all exit stairs. Identify where the exit stairs end. Identify exit routes. Identify and discuss with your Supervisor where you will meet should a fire, fire alarm, or emergency happen.

Environmental Health and Safety Definitions Evacuation – The emptying of a building during an emergency. Partial Evacuation – The emptying of some, but not all, people from a building during an emergency. Evacuation Stairway – Are stairs that are away from the emergency and used to the evacuate people from the building.

Environmental Health and Safety Definitions Shelter In Place – When you are told to remain at location, in the building, in response to an emergency. Assembly Area – A location outside of a building where people meet after an evacuation. 5

Environmental Health and Safety Fire Prevention Maintain corridors and aisles free from obstructions. Maintain exits and fire escapes free from obstructions Maintain fire alarm devices free from obstruction Don’t overload electric supply Never prop stair doors open Report all hazardous conditions to your Supervisor

Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Equipment Some of the emergency equipment found on our campus include: 1. Pull Station Alarms that are location on each floor and at exits. The alarm transmits to a monitoring station. The monitoring station notifies the FDNY. Pull Stations are not automatic and are activated when one pulls the lever. 2. Smoke Detectors 3. Automatic Sprinklers

Environmental Health and Safety Fire Response If you see smoke or fire, or hear a fire alarm? You need to react REACT! R emove persons in immediate danger. This includes yourself – so evacuate the building. E nsure doors are closed. This helps prevent the spread of smoke and fire. A ctivate the building alarm. This will alert others and notify the Fire Department. C all the Fire Department. Sometimes fire alarms don’t always notify the Fire Department. To make sure that help is on the way, call 911. T reat All fires as dangerous, because they are dangerous.

Environmental Health and Safety Fire Response Evacuation Should you see a fire, or smoke, hear a fire alarm, or are directed to evacuate, evacuate immediately. Check the exit stairwell door for heat before opening the door. Use back of your hand to check for heat and then open the door slightly to check for smoke. If the stairwell is compromised, make sure that you alert others use a different stairwell to leave the building.

Environmental Health and Safety Fire Response Evacuation Don’t stop to bring anything or go back for anything. Report to the designated assembly area. Notify your Supervisor and NYU Public Safety should you be missing anyone.

Environmental Health and Safety Non-Fire Emergencies There are other types of emergencies that can cause a building evacuation. Terrorism: a) CBRN – chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear. b) Explosives – IED – improvised explosive device. c) Active Shooter – ABC – avoid, barricade, confront. Natural Disasters a) Weather – tornados, hurricanes, flooding, high winds. b) Earthquakes Industrial accidents – chemical spills, gas leaks, structural integrity.

Environmental Health and Safety Responsibility Safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something that appears unsafe, or if you have any safety related questions, you should have a discussion with your Supervisor.

Environmental Health and Safety When in doubt… When in doubt about anything covered in this training, tell your Supervisor If there is an emergency, dial 911 and then call the NYU Department of Public Safety at 212 -998 -2222 From a campus phone, dial 9 -911.
