CATALOG DESCRIPTION • Behavoral studies related to supervision. • Supervisory functions, motivation, interviewing, and personal advancement. • Lecture, case studies, discussions, and reports.

Objectives: l The course is intended to introduce the student to basic supervision concepts, theories, and applications. l Supervision will be explored in terms of the functions that supervisors perform. l An overview of supervisor skills, concerns, and challenges, especially people skills and the utilization of people in organizations is contained in the course. l This overview will aid the student in appreciating the problems and issues that arise in modern organizations.

Grades l There will be three exams given during the semester including the final exam. • Exams are based on lectures and textbook materials. l Four mini-essays and a more extensive project paper will meet the writing intensive portion of the course. l If a student misses an exam due to illness or valid excuse, he/she may make up the exam during the last class. • There will be no make up exams prior to that time.

Grade guidelines—Mini Essays Subjective A (100 -93) A-, B+, B (92 -84) Outstanding Exceptional in form and content Above average Fine work, few minor flaws: interesting, insightful, logical, well designed, well developed, well organized, clear and attractive style, grammatically correct, no major flaws B-, C+, C, C Average (83 -70) D (70 -60) F Generally correct, shows understanding of course concepts, reasonably competent but with some important flaws, a mixture of strengths and weaknesses Below average Seriously deficient in content, form, or style Failing Incoherent ideas, very disorganized presentation, many grammatical problems, other excessive flaws

Major Errors in Writing l l l No thesis • • Found in the introduction Defines the essence of the paper Paragraph—Too many main ideas and too long. • Each paragraph should have one main topic and should be two or more sentences. Comma usage—Comma used where shouldn’t be and not used where should be. Sentence doesn’t make sense. • Sentence fragment—Subject with no verb. Citations & References • • Citations not used correctly.

ENTC 4017 Course Content

Week 1: l Syllabus and Introduction • Assignment: Read Chapters 1 & 2.

Week 2: l Assignment: Mini-Essay 1. Due 1/23/03 • Mini-Essay 1: • • List the organization and department in which you work. Interview your supervisor regarding: What he/she does in the course of a typical day. How much of their time is spent working with people. What is the hardest part of their job. What is the most satisfying part of their job. What management functions (planning, organizing, staffing, directing (leading), controlling) do they perform. • • • You should use third person passive when possible. There should be at least two citations in your report. Read Chapters 3 & 4.

Week 3 l Assignment: Read Chapters 5 & 6

Week 4 l Review for Test 1: Chapters 1 -6

Week 5 (February 6, 2003) l Test 1: Chapters 1 -6 • Assignment: • Read Chapters 7 & 8.

Week 6 l One page proposal l Assignment: • • Read Chapters 9 & 10 & Mini-Essay 2. Due 2/20/03 Mini-Essay 2: The American with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against disabled employees in the private sector and encourages reasonable accommodation for them. • Conduct an Internet/library search on the legislation and find one recent court case ruling in favor of the plaintiff and one recent course case ruling against the plaintiff and discuss the merits of each.

Week 7 l Assignment: • • Read Chapters 11 & 12 One page proposal outlining your term paper. • February 27, 2003 • Term Paper • The term paper must be at least seven pages and no more than 15 pages in length not including the title page, reference pages, and appendices. The paper will be typewritten and double spaced. Topics for Term Paper will be: • Discrimination in the workplace. • Total Quality Management. • The Effects of Improving Productivity in the workplace. • Diversity in the workplace. • The Effects of Federal and State laws. • Leadership and vision. • Each paper must have • an introduction (1 -3 pages) discussing the topic to be covered. • The introduction will be followed by research concerning the current thinking on the topic (3 -5 pages) and • your conclusions (2 -4) pages.

Week 8 l Review for Test 1: Chapters 7 -12

Week 9 March, 6 2003 l Test 2—Chapters 7 -12 l Assignment: • • Read Chapters 13 & 14 Mini-Essay 3. Due 3/13/03 • Mini-Essay 3 --Use yourself as an example and lists those methods that successfully motivate you and those methods that do not. • • Don’t forget to compare those factors that motivate you with theory presented in Certo. Don’t forger your citations.

Week 10 l Assignment: • Read Chapters 15 & 16

Week 11 l Assignment: • Read Chapters 17 & 18

Week 12 l l Assignment: • Read Chapters 19 & 20 Mini-Essay 4. Due 4/10/03 • • Mini-Essay 4: There is a growing interest in both the public and private sectors to increase productivity. Select a local industry--perhaps the industry for which you work--and describe productivity improvement that can be made. • • Don’t forget to compare those factors that motivate you with theory presented in Certo. Don’t forger your citations.

Week 13 l Review for Test 3 l Assignment: • Complete term paper. • Term paper due on April, 17, 2003.

ENTC 4017 Revision Option

Method l Revision means literally "seeing again, " developing a new perspective on the writing task. • • l Just correcting the original work based on my comments or your own observations will not be accepted as revision; instead, you'll have to rewrite the document significantly. Some revisions can raise your grade • • all revisions should help you learn more about writing well. I’m happy to help you to revise: • I highly recommend that you check in with me at some point before you submit a revised assignment so I can help you • • focus on the most important areas, brainstorm options, assess your progress, and otherwise assist you to improve.

Grading l Revisions of two assignments can be submitted for re-grading. • • No risk is involved (you cannot receive a lower grade than the one originally assigned) but neither do you have a guarantee of earning a higher grade for your effort. • In order to insure that you work hard on your initial • assignments, revision grades will not be more than one full grade higher than the original grade. Revision grades replace the original grades rather than being averaged with them.

Materials l l The original document containing my comments and grade must accompany the revision, along with old and new background material.

Timing l You may submit a revised assignment at any time during the semester; • all revisions are due one week before the last day of class— no exceptions. • Students often find it useful to delay revision until later in the semester for the following reasons: • • They can apply the additional course material to improve their writing They learn by practicing their writing skills in other assignments They gain perspective by putting the work away for a time They have more assignments to consider for revision, so they can choose the ones that will count most toward their course grade
