Time Delay Estimation in MIMO Systems • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems provide diversity and/or multiplexing gains for communications systems • MIMO can also improve performance of radar systems by providing better detection and characterization of target objects • Also for timing synchronization, MIMO structures can provide “diversity” for accurate time delay estimation • Smaller accuracy limits [Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs)] can be achieved via MIMO structures

CRLB on Time Delay Estimation • Consider a downlink MISO system with M transmit

CRLB on Time Delay Estimation • Consider a downlink MISO system with M transmit antennas and one receive antenna where si(t) is the signal from the ith transmit antenna, αi is the channel coefficient for the ith signal, and n(t) is additive white Gaussian noise with spectral density σ2. • CRLB for unbiased time delay estimators

Example Scenarios (1/2) • 2 subcarriers, T=100 μs, Rician fading (K=1) • 2 x

Example Scenarios (1/2) • 2 subcarriers, T=100 μs, Rician fading (K=1) • 2 x 1 MISO versus SISO (ρ=1 and ρ=0. 75)

Proposed Text for the SDD • It is proposed to add the following into Section 11. 4. x of the SDD document (IEEE 802. 16 m-08_003 r 3). ======= Text Start ======== The preamble provides support for MIMO systems: – The preamble can be coded and transmitted from different antennas. – The subcarriers of the preamble can be divided into disjoint sets and transmitted from different antennas. – The preamble can be transmitted from one of the antennas. ======= Text End =========
