+ ENGLISH REFORMATIONS and my family tree

+ n I thought hard about “what am I keenly interested in? ” Well, I am keenly interested in gardening and houseplants, especially begonias, but that represents a limited number of dates. I am also keenly interested in needlework, but, again, limited items for that. I am keenly interested in history but then I remembered that I am also keenly interested in genealogy. Genealogy combines my love of history with my love of family. It also makes history come alive: through genealogy events are not only things that happened ‘back then’, I have a connection through people with whom I am (distantly) related. Cool. There aren’t any ‘big names’ in my family tree, but I did get a bit of a rush when I discovered my g. grandfather’s name in the minutes of a Methodist Conference of the early 1800’s. Now, truth be told, I have verified information back to the early 1600’s; beyond that I am not so sure. Those relations for whom I do not have multiple verified attestations I have indicated. The numbers refer to the sources of information that I have for each person and the event mentioned; a listing of genealogical resources follows the timeline.

+ The Romano-British Church

+ C 209 C. E. martyrdom of St. Alban Frosti Karasson was born. He became the King in Kvenland. {*2}

+ C 490 Britons defeat the pagan Saxons at the Battle of Mons Badonicus (legend has it that King Arthur was a key leader of the Britons). Jorund Yngvasso was born. He became King of Uppsala. (*2)

+ 596 Pope Gregory sends Augustine and a group of monks to England. Yrsa Helgasdottir marries Adils Ottarsson. (*2)

+ 664 At the Synod of Whitby, King Oswie rules on how to calculate the date of Easter. Domnall “the Speckled” Brece of Argyll dies in battle. (*2) The Battle occurs at Strathcarron.

+ 698 Cuthbert’s body (buried eleven years) is found to be incorrupt; he had participated in the Synod of Whitby. Rutpert I, son of Lambert II was born. Rutpert I became the Count in Upper Rhine and Worms. (*2) As Count he offered his services to Pepin.

+ Henry and his Reformation

+ May 1524 William Tyndale leaves London and begins his translation of the Bible into English. John Lyman celebrates his eighth birthday in High Ongar, Essex. {*2}

+ 1527 -1533 Henry VIII decides to divorce Catherine of Aragon; Reformation Parliament comes into being; Ann Boleyn becomes pregnant; Henry marries Ann; in September Elizabeth is born. John Hungerford marries Bridget Fettiplace in Down Ampey, Gloucestershire; their son, Anthony, b. 1540, would become known as Sir Knight. (*2)

+ 1535 Henry VIII proclaims himself head of the Church of England. William Symes Ford born in Netherbury; his son Thomas travels to America on the Mary and John in 1630. (2)

+ 6 July 1535 Thomas More is executed for refusing to take the oath of supremacy of the crown. Thomas Brown christened at Swan Hall, Hawkedon, Suffolk. (*2)

+ 1549 Thomas Cranmer introduces the first Book of Common Prayer. Peter Osborne marries Anne Blythe at Tyld Hall, Essex. (*2)

+ 1611 The King James Bible is published. Stephen Tracy 3 rd is in Leiden as part of a group of Separatists fleeing persecution in England. (2, 4)

+ Rise of Methodism

+ 1735 John Wesley travels to Georgia; en route he meets the Moravians. Josiah Dewey II is one of the founders of Northampton, MA (2, 5)

+ 1738 John Wesley returns from Georgia…meets frequently with Peter Bohler…(6 March) begins to preach of salvation by faith alone. . (May) maps out the Fetter Lane Society…(24 May) has his heart ‘strangely warmed’ at Aldersgate. John Dempster enters into an agreement to build a town on land that he owned in Maryland. (2, 3)

+ 1744 At the church conference, John Wesley begins to lay the groundwork for connectionalism Ezekiel Yarrington, with other men of Stonington, CT, serves as a memorialist for John Hill. (2, 1)

+ 1783 Francis Asbury is the only preacher appointed by John Wesley who remains in America after the American Revolution. Gershom Clark is granted a pension for injuries sustained at the Battle of Bunker Hill with the Connecticut forces. (2, 1)

+ 1739 -1789 John Wesley rides a quarter of a million miles as a preacher: “I look upon the world as my parish. ” Caleb Whiting, b. 1780 in Virgil, New York, becomes an elder of the Methodist Church. (2)

+ Ecclesiological Renewal

+ 1833 The Irish Church Temporalities Bill is presented and passed. John Kreble delivers his Assize Sermon. Mary Ann George begins school in Carroll Co. , OH. (2)

+ 1838 William Palmer publishes “Treatise on the Church of Christ”, formulating the Branch Theory. The Lord Nelson sinks off of Mac. Quarie Island; John Forbes swims ashore. (6)

+ 1840 John Henry Newman writes “Tract 90” in which he maintains that “The Thirty-Nine Articles” are compatible with the Roman Catholic Church. Robert Forbes arrives in Van Buren Co. , Iowa. (6, 7)

+ 1845 John Henry Newman is received into the Roman Catholic Church. Minerva White, daughter of Nelson and Mary White, dies and is buried in the Forbes Cemetery, Van Buren Co. , IA. (2, 8)

+ 1874 Disraeli brings before Parliament the Public Worship Regulations Bill meant to limit growing ritualism of Anglo-Catholicism; its passage deals a blow to the Oxford Movement. George Dempster is one of the founders of the Methodist Church in Doniphan, NE. (9)

+ The Global Church and its Covenant

+ 1799 The Church Missionary Society is founded to send missionaries to non -Christians across the British Empire. Benjamin Thatcher is working a small farm near Piermont, NH. (2, 6)

+ 1867 First Lambeth Conference meets to discuss issues and arrive at action plans. Hiram Clark makes his way to Illinois after mustering out of the 50 th New York Engineers. (2, 10)

+ 1975 There are 2 to 2. 5 million Anglicans in the United States: there are 5 million in Nigeria. I spend the summer in Pamplona, Spain.

+ 2003 An openly gay cleric, Gene Robinson, is ordained Bishop in New Hampshire; conservative congregations, especially in the global south, protest, some leaving the Communion. Ben Forbes lettered in varsity soccer as a junior – his 3 rd letter in soccer.

+ 2009 The Anglican Communion Covenant is sent to churches in the Communion for ratification. Richard Forbes completes the Pastry Certificate at PPCC.
