Capitalization Rules • First word of a sentence • Proper Names, including brand names, companies, days of the week, months of the year, government names, historical eras, holidays, institutions, manmade structures (Empire State Building), manmade territories (Breathitt County), natural and manmade landmarks (Mount Everest), nicknames, planets, races, nationalities, tribes, religions, names of deities, special occasions (The Olympics), streets and roads

Capitalization Rules • Titles that appear before names (President Lincoln) • Relative family names when they are used as the name (Aunt Liz, my aunt Liz) • Specific geographical regions when used as the name (Eastern Kentucky) • Course titles (Algebra I, algebra class) • Art movements

In-class Writing • Return paragraphs from yesterday – most important day. • Revise to be sure you have at least ten words that need to be capitalized (don’t count words at the beginning of sentences). • Add another Unit 1 vocabulary word. • Underline or circle these words (capitalized and vocabulary).
