English GCSE Creative writing Question 5; Paper 1
Today… • Using connotation and analysis to build a plan • Expanding ideas • Getting started • Writing an answer
Using connotation to generate ideas In table groups, fill your whiteboard with connotations based on this word – STREETS You have 1 minute
Expanding & analysing ideas In table groups, pick your THREE strongest words and come up with two connected connotations for each. Do a mini analysis – why did STREETS make you think of this? Are your further ideas still STREETY, or have you moved in another direction?
Generating ideas and finding a place to start We are going to look at three pictures of similar but different urban street scenes. In table groups, you need to come up with a descriptive sentence SUGGESTED by the image. Do not DESCRIBE the image – write a sentence on what comes to mind. NO - I can see X, Y, Z… YES – The sharp glare of the neon lights reflects sadly on the rain-wet pavements…
Things to remember… Remember to look for small details to help you become more creative. Whose perspective is the picture from? Why does the scene look the way it does? Remember the SENSES
Expanding ideas Now, you are to take the best of the three sentences and swap with another table / partner group; start working on adding a second sentence in the style of the first. Focus on perspective & on descriptive vocabulary.
Switching tasks! In your Paper 1 exam, Question 5 will give you TWO options – you are to answer ONE! You can write a description SUGGESTED by a picture OR… Write the OPENING part of a story.
Story openers… Which of these is the best for a story opener? Why? - I ran and ran, headlong through the backstreets until my chest burned and my breath felt like fire… - There was a lad this one time… - The night sky above, cloudless yet strangely starless, sirens getting closer, I took one step further towards what I most feared…
Choosing an image; starting a story You are to choose an image from the three street scenes and write the first three sentences of the opening of your story. Choose a point to start at – a perspective, a person, a mood to follow. You have five minutes.
Paper One; Section B – Writing. You are now going to spend 30 minutes on a P 1; Q 5 question. On your exam it says – “You are reminded of the need to plan your answer. ” Why? How best can you do this?
Paper One; Section B – Writing. You are each to produce a piece of writing, though you can discuss it and steal ideas from each other! (if this helps!)
Feedback, Recall & Reflect Change places with others on other tables and read some of the work. Comment on why you chose the option you did and what you think was best about your partners writing. • What could they have done even better? • How could they maximise their time in the exam?
