Writing Welcome back! How did you get on with your writing? Here’s an example opening: Baron Stelgratz When the honourable Baron Stelgratz agreed to accompany his dear friend Prince Otto and his adorable son Florian on a hunting trip, little did he know that he would not return… It was a dark day, in the depths of winter, when they set off in the royal sledge. The biting cold wind bit at their hands and faces as they wound through the dense forest. Howling filled the air, was it wolves or the wind? Prince Otto whipped frantically at the horses, eager to reach the lodge before nightfall. The sledge sped on, the exhausted horses heaved it up the mountain trails. Suddenly, in the thick of the forest, for no apparent reason they stopped dead in their tracks…
Vocabulary Before reading some more of ‘Fritz’s Story’ there’s some more vocabulary to become familiar with. Look up and record simple definitions for the words that are unfamiliar to you. wound apoplexy contusion mourning shrouded intricate apparatus contemplating prominent harsh curiosity uncanny harpsichord Mozart latch threshold caverns canvas drained mockingly ghastly convulsively intervened inhibited crumpled thrust citizens mute eminent Here are five examples: A wound (noun) is an injury that has been caused by a cut or an impact, usually resulting in the skin being broken. Apoplexy (noun) names the result of a brain haemorrhage or a stroke. Contusion (noun) is the medical term for an injury to the skin or tissue involving a bruise or ruptured blood capillaries. Mourning (noun) names the grieving or sorrow that follows a person’s death. Shrouded is the past tense form of the verb to shroud, it means cover, veil, wrap or similar. Intricate (adjective) describes something which is complex and detailed.

Comprehension After reading this part of ‘Fritz’s Story (continued)’, answer these questions: 1. What is meant by ‘…in league with the powers of darkness’? 2. When Dr Kalmenius stepped inside the tavern, how did Fritz’s audience react? 3. How do you think Fritz felt about the appearance of his character Dr Kalmenius? Explain using evidence from the text. 4. The author uses several similes in this part of the story, find and copy two that you find the most effective and explain why. 5. Why did both Herr Ringelmann and the Burgomaster feel that they had a duty to speak to Dr Kalmenius but then leave without speaking to him? 6. Why do you think that Dr Kalmenius came to the White Horse Tavern? Now there’s one more task to complete. Use the text to compile a fact file or character profile of Dr Kalmenius, it could be in a humorous style. You could draw him too! Remember to record a guess at what might be on his sledge… Answers next session!
