English- Detective Academy

Welcome to the Detective Academy! Today you will be participating in a detective academy! Throughout the year you will work on your detective skills to become better readers. Before I can put you out there in the field I need to make sure that they go through detective training.

What do Detectives do? �From your experience watching detective shows, what do detectives do when they arrive to the scene of a crime? �Think of CSI, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, etc.

Detectives… �Investigate the crime scene �Look for evidence �Use tests to make sure the evidence is strong, �Then make a claim based on the evidence.

EVIDENCE is ESSENTIAL �Today we are going to focus on investigating the Evidence, and in order to make sure we are able to be successful, we need to be able to make inferences.

What is an inference? �What are inferences? �What do we know about inferences? �Have you ever heard of an inference before?

Inferences… �Inferences- Conclusions we make based on our observations or clues from a story. Inferences are based from out prior knowledge �To make an inference is to use an educated guess to get to the implied meaning of something.

Make an Inference! �You walk into the first room of the Crime Scene and you find a pair of dirty shoes on the floor:

� At five-feet-six and a hundred and ten pounds, Queenie Volupides was very pretty. When she ran out of the house after a fight with her husband, Arthur, she went to the country club where there was a party going on. � She left the club shortly before one in the morning and invited a few friends to follow her home and have one more drink. � They got to the Johnson house about ten minutes after Queenie, who met them at the door and said, “Something terrible happened. Arthur slipped and fell on the stairs. He was coming down for another drink—he still had the glass in his hand—and I think he’s dead. Oh, my God—what shall I do? The autopsy conducted later concluded that Arthur had died from a wound on the head and confirmed that he’d been drunk. Is Queenie lying? �
