4. Symbolism is an important technique employed throughout the play. With reference to the yacht (and any other symbolic feature) discuss the ways in which symbolism strengthens your understanding of the play as a whole. (8) Symbolism is important to understanding the characters and ideas in the play. Fire represents the end of things, that characters are moving on and forgetting. For example, when Davie burns his old tools at the start of the extract this symbolises him moving on and giving up hope of returning to his old career.
