“Modeling” means to “show” • show activities • show language “Scaffolding” is the support that we give to students.

Responsibility Teacher Student The key to student-centered teaching is getting the students involved. A good teacher does less work than the students at the end of an activity or lesson. “Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand. Step back and I will act. ”

Scaffolding is the support the teacher gives to the learner. Scaffolding in language teaching can include: scaffolding learner development • talking simply and slowly • doing easy tasks before difficult tasks • using mimes to help comprehension • showing pictures • pre-teaching vocabulary

More tips for starting a lesson • Personalize - “Do you remember we went to the zoo? What was your favourite animal? ” • Contextualize - “What cities do you know in Europe? What European food can you name? ”

Context 1. the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc. Personalize 1. to make personal - to apply a general statement to oneself. 2. to design or tailor to meet an individual's specifications, needs, or preferences.

Task Think about questions, activities and materials that would personalize and contextualize these topics in a language lesson. Dogme (Scott Thornbury and Luke Meddings) 3 primary aims: • teaching through conversation • taking out external input such as course book and technology • letting the lesson content be driven by the students rather than being preplanned by the teacher

Dogme activity Task: Find one of your old photos on your phone that shows something interesting or amazing that you did (use Facebook or Instagram if necessary). Show it to your partner and try telling an interesting story about what happened when you took the photo.

“Principled eclecticism” principle a fundamental source or basis of something. eclectic deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. What do you think it means for language teachers?

“Principled eclecticism” • flexible and adaptable • allows teacher to select a variety of approaches, methods, and techniques to fit the context • starts from analysis of Ss needs + objectives • But: the teacher needs to understand methods/techniques to make informed decisions
