What is engineering? Engineering is the application of both science and math to solve problems. Engineers figure out how things work and find uses for scientific discoveries. Engineers design, evaluate, develop, modify, install, inspect, and maintain a wide variety of products.

Types of Engineering The four main branches of engineering include: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical engineering, but there are many more fields. Examples: Aerospace: Build machines that fly in air and space Nuclear: harness energy released from nuclear reaction Biomedical: create medical equipment and devices to solve clinical problems

What is Engineering at YWLA? Engineering is a STEM based pathway. At YWLA, students take courses including Principles of Applied Engineering, Engineering Design & Presentation I, Engineering Design and Presentation II, and STEM Practicum.

At YWLA Freshman Year: Freshman year students are taught the principles and basic concepts of what an engineer is and does. Students are also required to complete their certifications this year. OSHA, Cyber Safety, Employability, and Customer Service Sophomore Year: At the beginning of Sophomore year, students create a pinhole camera in order and submit it to UT or UTSA in order to participate in the Engineer Your World program and receive college credit. All students then continue the EYW curriculum and more about engineering design, programming, systems, and analyzing.

Reverse Engineering Gives students the opportunity to think about how someone else designed a common consumer product, and how they could improve the design. Earthquake Using skills developed in the previous unit, students design and conduct an experiment to test building modifications. Electronic Music Introduces students to basic electronic circuits and coding by asking them to build a simple speaker circuit and program it to play any piece of music that they like

At YWLA Junior Year: Junior year students do the second course for Engineer Your World which focuses on applications of computer science. This year, students program another song, create custom photo filters, create computer assisted physical therapy, mechatronic devices, camera controlled wheelchair, and water rockets. Senior Year: During senior year, students take part of STEM practicum where they have time to work on their senior projects and internships. We have not had a student intern as an engineer yet, but engineering students have received internships and participated.
