Activity • A Bit of Reverse Engineering – How are flashlights designed and made? • Please work in pairs using the worksheets – Disassemble the product – List materials used – Propose ways in which people worked to design and make the product – Challenge: • Brainstorm how each material and manufacture step may impact the environment.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY IDEAS

Making Paper • Activity idea: – Make paper as a class after discussing life cycles of manmade things and learning how paper is made – Ask class to propose ideas of how they think they might be able to make paper themselves in their classroom before doing the activity • Another idea: the students could incorporate leaves, flowers, construction paper scraps and other things into their paper. This opens the door for other lessons to be tied in to the paper making lesson.

Energy Use • Activity idea: – Use watt-hour meter to measure energy used by various small electronics – Tie into engineering/technology and product life cycle via discussion • Remember energy is consumed when manufacturing the product and recycling/disposing of product • Engineers, scientists, designers and other people helped design and manufacture the product • Can discuss materials the product is made of (plastic, metal, glass, etc. ) in a life cycle activity
