What are Any Time Discussions? • Conversations carried out between inclass or synchronous meetings. • Could be instructor-student, instructorclass, or student-student.
Why use Any Time Discussions? a. To extend the synchronous or in-class discussion. b. To provide greater flexibility about when students can reply. c. To prepare students for synchronous work. d. To reduce technological glitches. e. To give non-native speakers more time to respond. f. To reduce the pressure on quieter students. g. To deepen the conversation. h. To ask more complex questions. i. To increase equity.

What are some of the Best Practices? 1. Decide how you will grade participation and attendance. 2. Work to create a sense of community. 3. Have students help establish rules for etiquette. 4. Assign an icebreaker. 5. Provide discussion prompts two weeks ahead of due date. 6. Assign multiple due dates. 7. Use divergent questions to generate deeper student responses. 8. Treat students like experts in training. 9. Model academic responses. 10. Set high expectations for student responses, but grade lightly. 11. Provide a rubric for discussion responses. 12. Use a limited number of discussion and assessment protocols. 13. Monitor student Interactions. 14. Be cautious with humor.
