ENERGY • What is energy • Types of energy • Forms of energy • How energy is used
WHAT IS ENERGY • Energy is the ability to do work, and work is moving something against a force, like gravity. There a lot of different kinds of energy in the universe, and that energy can do different things.
WHAT IS ENERGY • Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but can change form; for instance, chemical energy can be converted to kinetic energy.
TYPES OF ENERGY There are different forms of energy, but there are only two types of energy These include: • Kinetic energy • Potential energy
KINETIC ENERGY • Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. An object that has motion, whether it is vertical or horizontal motion, has kinetic energy.
POTENTIAL ENERGY • Potential energy is energy which results from position or configuration. An object may have the capacity for doing work as a result of its position in a gravitational field.
FORMS OF ENERGY • Since energy is needed to do work, whenever we see work being done, it means that energy is being used. There are many different forms of energy these include: • • • Chemical Light Heat Mechanical Electrical Nuclear
HOW ENERGY IS USED • We divide our energy use among four economic sectors: residential, commercial, transportation, and industrial. Heating and cooling our homes, lighting office buildings, driving cars and moving freight, and manufacturing the products we rely on in our daily lives are all functions that require energy. If projections are correct, we’re going to keep needing more.
