Energy systems ATP system
Lesson objectives To understand how the body produces energy in different types of activities. Today we are mainly looking at the energy produced from explosive activities. Why the body uses the ATP system
When the body does exercise is converts fuel to energy. It then releases it into the body using different respiratory systems. These systems then kick in automatically depending on the type, intensity and duration of the exercise being performed.
Watch the following videos and write down the ; Intensity of the activity; e. g explosive/ fast Duration of the activity; e. g short/ long. Type of activity, e. g throwing/ sprinting Complete the answers on the sheet
Most of these activities show a single maximum burst of energy. They use one massive burst of maximum effort to complete the activity. Such as throwing and jumping events which are explosive. The time it takes to complete these events is very short, so the performer uses it supplies which are already in the body. Using the information on this Slide answer question 1.
In each of the videos the energy being used is produced anaerobically. So NO oxygen is being used. Some types of sports only use anaerobic respiration (no oxygen); like the examples we have just looked at. Using the information on this Slide answer question 2.
The demand of oxygen in the muscles is so quick that the cardiovascular system does not have time to supply the demand of oxygen. So energy is produced without oxygen by a chemical in your body called; Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Using the information on this Slide answer question 3.
This ATP only supplies the body with only enough energy for around 10 seconds; long enough to do a throw or a jump. There are only limited stores of ATP in the body. To increase this a performer can train up their muscles to contain more levels of ATP (short bursts of energy); allowing them to perform for longer periods of time, at the highest possible intensity. Using the information on this slide, answer questions 4 & 5.
Explain why all these three sports use the ATP system (3 marks)
Answers All have maximum bursts of energy It takes one single effort to complete the activity It takes less than 10 seconds to complete activity The respiratory system does not have enough time to supply the oxygen to muscles
