FOSSIL FUEL Fossil fuel are hydrocarbon which are coal, fuel oil or natural gas. They are formed from the remains of dead plants and animals under the earth’s pressure. We burn fossil fuel to create steam that will push a turbine and generate electricity. Fossil fuel is cheap and there’s a lot of it burning fossil fuel releases tons of carbon dioxide and other toxic into the air causing air pollution and global warming. There a lot of fossil fuel power station all over the world because how cheap it is.
WIND ENERGY! Wind energy is made by wind turbines which convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy and can either be used for tasks like grinding grain or pumping or can be convert to electrical energy to power stuff. It creates energy out free, renewable resource and doesn’t cause air pollutions. The problem with wind energy is that the wind is not always blowing and it will be hard to predict had much energy you will get. People have also been saying that it looks bad, makes long noises, and bird keep crashing into them. Wind turbines are usually built in remote area where the air is stronger. Some people build turbine near their homes.
Solar Cell Solar power is when you convent protons (mostly from the sun) into electricity. Solar power is a easy renewable source of electricity that doesn’t cause air pollution or damage to the environment. Bad thing about it is that it is expensive, only works when the sun is out, and doesn’t charge much. Solar power is used a lot for small gadgets like calculators. Some people build them on their house to save on electricity. There also a few solar power farms built in rural places.
Hydroelectricity To create hydroelectricity you must build a dam on a river big enough to get plenty of electricity. Next you build turbines in the dam and have the water push the turbines and generate electricity. Hydroelectricity is cheap, flexible to change amount of energy, and doesn’t pollute. The only problem is that it may effect the ecosystem. Hydro power station are built around the world. China so far has the world biggest dam and there are some really small dams built in developing nations.
NUCLEAR FUSION! Nuclear fusion is when two atomic particle’s nucleus smash together to make one smaller particle. When the particles combine, it releases a high energy particle. But so far scientist are having trouble with nuclear fusion. To have a nuclear fusion you must have very high temperature and pressure. Deuterium is used in fusion and can be easily extracted form seawater. Fusion energy doesn’t make air pollution or much radiation and radioactive waste. Fusion is way safer then fission. NASA are hoping to make nuclear fusion rockets. People are experimenting with this around the world. They are building the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache, France, to show great nuclear fusion is.
