MATERIALS NEEDED EVERYDAY - Energy Student Notebook - Energy Family Links - Pencil - Assignment Book
LESSON QUESTION How does energy make things happen in our daily lives?
VOCABULARY energy transfer solar energy
WATCH AND OBSERVE Solar Powered Propeller
Watch the airplane propeller in this video. Where does the propeller get the energy to spin? Today we will be learning about energy transfer. Instances where energy moves from one place or object to another? Or Changes from one form to another? In the next few lessons we will be working with toys to map energy transfer. LET ’S W AT CH
HOW DO WEMAP ENERGY TRANSFER? Look at the board… What forms of energy are evident as the solar propeller operates? Does energy change from one form to another? If so, in what order? Label with the type of energy involved. Draw arrows to show it moves. Write a description next to each
LET’S READ Open your books to Chapter 2. We will read about these concepts together.
SESSION 2
REVIEW THE QUESTION How does energy make things happen in our daily lives?
LET’S EXPLORE You will be mapping energy from toys today. You will be using pgs. 5 -13 in your Energy Notebooks. Take turns using the toys gently (they are needed for others). At each station: operate the toy, discuss how energy transfers, and then map how the energy transfers. When you switch to the next station you will put everything back into the bags from which they came
REFLECT AND DISCUSS What was your favorite toy? Which toy was most difficult to figure out? Why? When was it most clear that energy was being transferred? What made it so obvious? Was it always possible to know for sure what kinds of transfers occurred? Why/why not? Could you still tell that energy was still being transferred even when the parts were hidden from view?
REFLECT AND DISCUSS Did you observe energy changing forms at any of the stations? Were there any stations where the members of the group could not agree on the energy transfers that occurred? Do you think that energy can make something happen without being transferred? Did energy run out of any toys at a stations? If the energy ran out, where did it go?
