ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR The Green Deal in Brief: • Fewer emissions, more renewable energy, more aggressive 2030 target and net-zero emissions by 2050 • Cities implicitly at the centre: community energy, renovation wave, sector integration, public transport, circular economy • Current National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) generally don’t reflect this.

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR What was done in 2020?

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR What was done in 2020? Smart Sector Integration - a mobility plan for energy (heat) – how do we re-use heat from industry, data centres, supermarkets, etc. in our homes? Renovation Wave – mandatory renovation of government-owned buildings (30% threshold? 60%? ) Offshore Renewable Energy – from 12 GW to 300 GW by 2050

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR Upcoming in 2021 EU Emissions

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR Upcoming in 2021 EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) – will it be extended to buildings, vehicles (making oil and gas heating / petrol and diesel more expensive) Amendment Renewable Energy Directive – higher and binding national targets for renewables – will cities be obliged to buy green energy? Will there be mandatory heat planning? Will there be binding targets for use of renewable heating and cooling in buildings? Growth of community energy?

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR Upcoming in 2021 Amendment Energy

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR Upcoming in 2021 Amendment Energy Efficiency Directive – higher and binding national targets for energy efficiency – • Extend massively programmes such as EU City Facility • Reinvest at the local level the revenue from ETS and the non-met efficiency obligations. • Develop One-Stop-Shops to inform and support citizens along the home renovation process. Revision of Energy Tax Directive Ireland has 3 times more tax and levies on electricity than gas – expect that to in the coming years

ENERGY IN THE GREEN DEAL – A WHISTLESTOP TOUR Upcoming in 2021 Revision on

Will make renovations (windows, insulation, heating system, etc. mandatory – brings a lot of complexity)
