V switchboard Auxiliary substation equipment The substation is approximately fifty years old Substation supply area: The substation supply the areas of: Part of Norkem Park Part of Birchleigh Allen Grove Glen Marais and Glen Marais extension 24
SUBSTATION HISTORY AND EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE Background to failure: Date and time of failure: 08 June 2018 at approximately 04: 00 Incident that led to the equipment failure: Caused by theft of feeder cables to Glen Marais Ext 24 substation Maintenance done on substation: Maintenance done in terms of the department’s approved Maintenance Plan, carried out a month prior to the incident: Monthly inspections and follow up job cards Annual transformer oil sampling Annual infra red scanning Two yearly intrusive maintenance Weekly battery inspections and follow up job cards

SUBSTATION HISTORY AND EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE What was done on site after the incident: Co. E had the services in place for the execution of the repair works for restoration of supply to customers. Supply was restored to customers as and when immediately possible. The damaged switchboard was replaced with a new switchboard. Supply to all customers were restored to all customers within seven days. Mobile feeder board: The mobile feeder board was installed in Germiston and could not be utilized at the time. You do not get mobile substations for this size of substation
SUBSTATION HISTORY AND EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE Mobile feeder board: The mobile feeder board was installed in Germiston and could not be utilized at the time. Preventative measures for the future: Pre-warning anti theft devices are being installed in “Hot Spot” areas on top of cable, this is a first in South Africa. Due to the age of the substation equipment, the department has already purchased the new switchboard and was in the planning stages for the replacement when the incident occurred. New switchboards were installed in Glen Marais - and Van Riebeeck substations.
