Conflict • Serious disagreement or argument • Based on differences in opinions or opposing ideas Example ØProblems or struggle between individuals, groups of people or nation. Questions ØWhat causes conflict? ØWhat effects does it have?
Cooperation • The process of working together to achieve the same goal. Example ØSomeone helps you lift a table, when you play on a team, or when nations come together to solve a mutual problem. Questions ØWhy do we cooperate with one another? What effects can cooperation have?
Enduring • Continuing or long-lasting over time. Example Ø Chronic back pain that lasts a person’s entire life, Ø Religious differences between Muslims and Jews Question Ø Why do certain problems continue to exist over long periods of time?
Environment • The area around people in which they live. • People affect their environments, and their environments affect them. Example ØIndustrialization has led to air pollution, which has made people sick. ØThe desert is so hot and dry that people have had to move to areas that have better soil for farming. Questions ØHow does our environment affect us? ØHow do we affect our environment?
Innovation • A change, new method or new idea. • Can have positive or negative effects. Example ØPeople began to farm and domesticate animals which led to the first settlements. ØThe invention of the internet has made information available to more people sooner. Question ØDo the benefits of an innovation outweigh the costs?
Interconnectedness • Having connections or relationships with other people • Can be caused by cultural diffusion, and have positive or negative impacts Examples ØSpread of disease from European explorers to the native peoples of the Americas ØPrinting techniques learned from the Chinese were used to develop the printing press. Question ØDo the benefits of interconnectedness outweigh the costs?
Issue • Challenge or problem for debate or discussion Examples ØViolations of human rights ØPoverty in certain areas Question ØWhy is the issue a problem and what are its effects?
Power • Ability to influence or control the behavior of people Examples ØKim Jong Un of North Korea ØHitler and the Nazis of Germany Questions ØHow is power gained, maintained, and lost? ØWhat are the effects on the people?
Inequality • The state of being unequal; one group has more than another. Examples ØDifferences between people of various social classes. ØMen having more rights and power than women. Questions ØWhy is there inequality? ØWhat effects does inequality have?
Ideas and Beliefs • Shape the way people look at the world • Come from observation, religion, parents, books, friends Examples Ø Major world religions ØPolitical ideas of different parties. Question ØHow do ideas and beliefs shape our lives and the world around us?
Population Growth • Occurs when more people are born than die. • Better health care, more food, new inventions help people live longer. Examples ØPopulation grew after farmers found new ways to grow food. ØPopulation of China is more than 2 billion people. Question ØWhat effects does population growth have on a civilization or nation?
