Functions • To control many of the body’s daily activities as well as long term changes such as development.
• Glands produce and release their chemical products directly to the blood stream • Hormones are the chemical product of an endocrine gland
Pituitary Glands • Function: to regulate growth and control functions of other glands • Also called “The Master Gland” • Located: at the base of the brain • Chemical produced: ACTH
Adrenal Gland • Functions: 1)regulates salt and water in the blood 2)assists body in meeting emergencies 3)functions in the development of sex characteristics • Located: top of kidneys • Chemical produced: cortisone and adrenaline
Islands of Langerhans • Function: regulates the storage of sugar in the body • Located: specialized cells in pancreas • Chemical produced: insulin
Ovaries (female only) • Functions: affects the formation of eggs and development of adult female sex characteristics • Located: on both sides of uterus • Chemical produced: estrogen ***See page 234 D in Green science book for image
Parathyroid • Function: regulates metabolism of calcium and phosphates • Located: under surface of thyroid gland • Chemical produced: parathormone

Thymus • Function: aids in the formation of antibodies • Located: upper chest or base of neck in child • Chemical produced: uncertain
Thyroid • Function: controls rate of body’s metabolism and influences growth and development • Located: lower region of neck • Chemical produced: thyroxin
