Endocrine System
Functions of endocrine • The system consists of a group of glands that secrete substances directly into the bloodstream • There are 8 glands in the endocrine system: Pineal, Pituitary, Thyroid, Thymus, Adrenal, Pancreas, Testes, Ovary
Hormones • Hormones are the substances produced and secreted by the endocrine glands. • They are transported throughout the body by the bloodstream and perform many functions, including stimulating glands.
pineal gland May delay puberty by inhabiting sex hormones witch may regulate sleep cycles
Pituitary gland It controls most of all the endocrine glands It is know as the master gland It produces many hormones
thyroid Thyroxine and triiodothyronine Increase metabolism rate, stimulate physical and mental growth Thyrocalcitocin Accelerates absorption of calcium by the bone and lowers blood calcium level
Pancreas Insulin Used in metabolism of glucose (suger) by promoting entry of glucose into cells Glucagon Maintains lining of uterus
Thymus Thymosin: Stimulates production of antibodies in early life it could end between the ages of 10 -16 years of age
Testes Testosterone: Stimulates growth and development of sex organs in the male
Ovary Estrogen Promotes growth and development of sex organs in females Progesterone Maintains lining of uterus
Adrenal Cortex: Mineralocorticoids: regulate the reabsorption of sodium in the kidney and the elimination of potassium Glucocorticoids: Aid in metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Medulla Epinephrine: Activates sympathetic nervous system, acts in stress Norepinephrine: Activates body in stress situations
