ENDOCRINE HOMEOSTATIC IMBALANCES DISEASES DISORDERS AND CONDITIONS AFFECTED
ENDOCRINE HOMEOSTATIC IMBALANCES DISEASES, DISORDERS AND CONDITIONS AFFECTED BY THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
PITUITARY DWARFISM, GIGANTISM & ACROMEGALY • Hyposecretion of Growth Hormone (GH) during childhood results in Pituitary Dwarfism • Hypersecretion of Growth Hormone (GH) during childhood results in Gigantism. • Continued Hypersecretion of GH can result in Acromegaly, which affects the skeletal system.
STERILITY • Lack of ability to successfully reproduce in both males and females. • Hyposecretion of FSH or LH
GOITERS • Enlargement of the thyroid gland • Results when the diet is lacking iodine.
CRETINISM • Results in dwarfism in which the adult body proportions remain childlike. • Hyposecretion of thyroxine and lack of stimulation by TSH.
ADDISON’S DISEASE • Hyposecretion of all the adrenal cortex hormones • Bronze tone of the skin, loss of electrolyte balance, muscle weakness.
GRAVE’S DISEASE • Type of Hyperthyroidism resulting in bulging eyes, enlarged thyroid, rapid heartbeat, weight loss and agitated behavior. • Caused by a tumor of the thyroid gland an excess secretion of thyroxine.
CUSHING’S SYNDROME • Caused by excessive glucocorticoids. • Results in swollen ‘moon’ face and an appearance of a ‘buffalo hump’ of fat on the upper back.
DIABETES Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes Type 2 Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition. It's caused by the body attacking its own pancreas with antibodies. With Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas usually produces some insulin. But either the amount produced is not enough for the body's needs, or the body's cells are resistant to it. Insulin resistance, or lack of sensitivity to insulin, happens primarily in fat, liver, and muscle cells. In people with type 1 diabetes, the damaged pancreas doesn't make insulin.
MENOPAUSE • Occurs in late middle ages in females. • Caused by a decline in efficiency of the ovaries to produce estrogen • Symptoms include hot flashes, fatigue, osteoporosis (softening of the bone), and arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
