About polar bears The polar bear has many unique adaptations for dealing with the Arctic cold. The polar bear's skin is actually black, which allows it to soak up as much heat as possible from the sun Polar bears eat mostly seals and other fatty marine mammals that they hunt from the ice. They dog-paddle with their head and much of their back above water. Their blubber helps to float them as they swim.
Polar bears continued……. . Polar bears live only in the northern Arctic where they spend most of their time on big ice chunks. They are the worlds biggest land meat eaterss !! Woaaah ! Way cool. Eats mostly ringed and bearded seals. They will occasionally eat other mammals, eggs, vegetation and beach-cast carrion a. k. a washed up dead stuff.
Why are polar bears becoming extinct? They have to stay on shore more, because the ice forms later in the year and lasts for fewer months. ( because of the global warming) Polar bears need the ice to live. They hunt seals from the ice floes and with less time on the ice. , the less time they have to eat. Polar bears do not hibernate. They have to have enough fat storage build up throughout the winter to last them throughout the spring, summer, and parts of fall.
Extinction continued…. earth now has more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The earth’s atmosphere is now getting thicker, and not allowing as much heat from the sun to go back into space. The green house gasses, CO 2, is holding this heat back, raising the temperature of the earth. If this continues, then in about 50 years the earth will be so warm, that the Polar Regions, polar bears depend on for survival, will no longer exist. They will have a small amount of ice and little snow. Since the polar bears depend on this very specific habitat, they will no longer be able to exist in the wild. The only place where they may exist would be in zoos. And that is no place for polar bears.
How can we help our polar bear friends? If we do not help them experts say they will be extinct by 2050 !!!!! We must not move forward with the existing drilling proposals in the Arctic Ocean !! Stop burning up the ozone layer with all our gases from cars and harmful hair sprays !! Then we will stop global warming and the ice floes won’t keep melting and the polar bears can float on them !!!!!
Interesting facts All that water they swim in. . believe it or not they do not drink any of it. They get all their liquids from the animals they eat. !!
