Categorizing Languages There are three different classifications to measure the long term survival of languages: � “Safe” - A language falls into this category if in one hundred years children will probably still be using this language. � “Endangered”- A language falls into this category if in one hundred years children will probably NOT be using this language. � “Moribund”- A language falls into this category if no children today speak it. �
The Oneida Language � Speakers: between 160 and 514 � Located: in Ontario, central New York, and around Green Bay, Wisconsin � History: Iroquoian-based language � Preservation: Extensive preservation efforts, but only for cultural preservation, not primary language usage.
