Preliminaries Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • PEB input further refined after feedback from 2 PMB/PEB workshops held in October and December 2006 – Available at https: //edms. cern. ch/document/821209/ – SA 3 input still missing • Several comments made by editorial team on initial drafts – Please try to incorporate them asap! • Bi-weekly meetings with PMB started on Feb. 19 – Initial topics: § NA 4 organization § § § § • Discussed on Feb. 19 – feedback distributed to PEB Effects on NGIs on SA 1 organization t-Infrastructure as separate activity TNAs (to be discussed after March 6) Middleware organization and focus Business activity vs independent projects NA 5 as a separate activity Role of Federations/ JRUs – Further topics can be suggested by PMB/PEB/Editorial Team INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 2
Timeline and Roadmap Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • February and March – Iterate over the program of work material addressing the points raised – Should have a first coherent version before Easter • April and early May – Highest priority tasks will be the preparation for the EGEE-II review and the user forum – Note we should present the latest plans for EGEE-III to the collaboration board during the user forum • May – Take into account EGEE-II review recommendations and published FP 7 call details • June – Refine material and add partner/budget allocations • June/July-August – Finalize budget, collect partner forms and letters of support • September – proposal submission INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 3
Boundary Conditions Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • EU contribution capped at 35 Million € – INFRA-2007 -1. 2. 3 e-Science Grid infrastructures is likely to be ~50 Million € • FP 7 cost models allow to charge up to 75% for R&D and up to 100% for other activities of costs (tbc) – This could reduce the total effort available within the project • EGEE-III will aim at a total effort (funded AND unfunded) of 10, 000 Person Months (compared to 11, 165 for EGEE-II with ~37 Million € EU funding) INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 4
Goals of this meeting Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Review contributions received so far • Start combining the individual plans into an overall project plan – Define project wide milestones § Measurable § Allow corrective measures to be taken § Take into account progress of EGI Design Project – Cross-activity interaction and coordination INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 5
Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E Major comments on input www. eu-egee. org INFSO-RI-031688
Comments on input Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • SA 1 – Existing ROCs vs. second level ROCs in EGI area – initiate already in EGEE-III? – Security auditing – separate project (OMII-EU? ) – Link SLAs to the OAG evolution § Enforcement part of TSA 1. 1 Grid Mgmt? • • • – Application integration support now NA 4? SA 2 – No major comments SA 3 – No input received SA 4 – Needs a better motivation why t-Infrastructure is needed – Relations to SA 1 (ROCs, GGUS) need to be better defined – Relations to ICEAGE need to be defined – Applications need to be moved from GILDA to the production system INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 7
Comments on input II Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • JRA 1 – No major comments at the moment – Focus of middleware will eventually need to be better defined • NA 2 – Depends heavily on 3 rd parties (belief? ) for conference organization, web sites etc. • NA 3 – Training VO vs. t-Infrastructure needs to be better motivated – Relations to ICEAGE need to be defined – Regional tasks (“activity mgmt and partner coordination”) needs to be better motivated – see NA 4 part – Do we need translation task? – Expand on commercial training – Support required from other activities’ experts? INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 8
Comments on input III Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • NA 4 (PMB feedback) – Clarify the relations of generic support to the ROCs – Advanced application support needs to be linked to large international – • communities; this needs in particular to be clarified for the grid observatory Determine if the projects listed in the ESFRI Roadmap (ftp: //ftp. cordis. europa. eu/pub/esfri/docs/esfri-roadmap-report 26092006_en. pdf) are compatible with EGEE and could use the infrastructure as part of their computing architecture NA 4 Bio should see how we can more proactively involve EBI Clarify manpower estimates (or have them taken out) Advanced application support could be a JRA – – – NA 5 – Should structural support of e-IRG be a task of EGEE (relations to e. IRGsp) – Should support of NGIs be a task of EGEE (relations to EGI Design Project) INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 9
Comments on input III Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • NA 6 – Seems the related project will not fly so need a dedicated business task § Open question where to find the manpower – Required support from other activities needs to be clarified – i-infrastructure needs to be clarified (no separate from t-infrastructure) – Relations to NA 4 need to be clarified • NA 1 – No overall text produced yet – First ideas for QA and Security coordination produced § Will probably reside under NA 1 eventually – Need to strengthen NA 1 for inter-activity coordination • Clusters of competence – Try to have a common definition INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 10

Cross Activity Coordination Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Already partially defined: – Security coordination § Overall coordination of middleware and operational security § Security architect still a question – QA § Need a QA task in each activity • Defines activity specific QA plus partner reviews, contributions to metrics program, contributions to quality group etc. § Should be worked out by quality group • Need to be defined: – Technical mgmt (cf. TCG, PEB, UIG, …) – Technical administrative mgmt (cf. AB, PEB, …) – PMB (out of scope here) INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 12
Overarching Goals Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Stable, usable infrastructure – Stability: uptime, … – Usability: hard to measure § Functionality – Reliability – Milestone 1: define these concepts § For the proposal – Milestone x-y: identify key weaknesses out of current reporting (NA 4 – VO mgrs, SA 1) and address them § SA 1/SA 3/JRA 1/NA 4 SA 2? – Milestone: take a new community and get their detailed feedback § External person? § Results feed into milestones x-y INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 13
Overarching Goals Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Quality user/VO support – Milestone x: VO mgrs document the status of the user support regularly; regular VO mgrs roundtable? – Ticketing statistics (with care) • Extensible service – Application specific services/tool – Site specifica/co-existence/invasiveness • Transition to sustainable infrastructure – GIN (and EGI) related milestones JRA 1, SA 3, SA 1 • Reduced operation costs – Monitoring tools INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 14

Milestones Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Derive project-wide milestones (not deliverables!) for overall goals – Measurable § How to measure performance of the infrastructure? § How to measure user support? § How to measure extensibility? – Allow to implement changes – Take into account EGI Design Project progress INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 16
Next actions Enabling Grids for E-scienc. E • Implement requested changes by March 15 • Define activity deliverables (minimal set!) according to project milestones by March 15 INFSO-RI-031688 EGEE-III PEB Planning 17
