Going towards BIO • Care for ecology • Abundance of bio-derived raw materials • Use of raw materials of 2 nd and 3 rd generation Fossil • Increasing demand of butadiene • Hedging against oil prices and shale-gas driven Searching for alternatives: Renewable butadiene volatility BTD BR • Lighter feedstock for cracking process • Shale gas surge • Access to markets where customers value biobased SYNTHOS S. Minimum Film Forming Temperature (MFFT) ADDITIVES FOR DECREASING MFFT: m Permanent plasticizers (e. g. phtalates, benzoates) that remain in the coating m Coalescing agents – low-volatility organic solvents that evaporate after the film formation: - boiling point < 250 o. C (e. g. butyl glycol, butyl diglycol, dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether) - boiling point > 250 o. C (e. g. 2, 2, 4 -trimethyl-1, 3 -pentandiol-1 -isobutyrate) - for „solvent free” paints Hydrophilic solvents (e. g. ethylene glycol, propylene glycol) have no plasticizing effect. They slow down the evaporation of water and so retard the formation of a film. They also lower the freezing point of the paint. SYNTHOS S. A. 2018 Emulsions with. Minimum Film Forming Temperature (MFFT) New way going towards BIO m BIO-friendly bio-based solvents (coalescing agents) such as Elevance Clean 1200 m VOC-exempt (40 CFR 59. 203 – Standards for consumer products; Directive 2004/42/CE) m Readily biodegradable (OECD Method 301) m Non-flammable (ASTM D-93) m Free of components listed in the EU Dangerous Substances Directive (Regulation No. 1272/2008) m Listed in the USDA Bio. Preferred catalog with 69% bio-renewable carbon m Qualifies for use in Safer Choice-labeled products (no label needed) (Reviewed by EPA’s Safer Choice) m BIO-friendly coalescing agent such as Benzyl Alcohol m allowed to use in the field of food contact materials (classified by Scientific Committee on Food) (E-1519) m BIO-friendly coalescing surfactant such as Dynol 360 m Low-viscosity, easy-to-handle liquid m Adds no VOCs per European and US regulations m Contains no added alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs) or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) m Solvent-free liquid SYNTHOS S.
