Emphatic forms
Emphatic forms are statements (or questions) used to emphasize a part of the sentence or the whole sentence. There are several ways to make emphatic forms. 2
Emphasizing a part of the sentence It is/was + emphatic word/phrase + that/who(m)/which/when/where Kate gave Sally flowers for her graduation last week. • It was Kate who gave Sally flowers for her graduation last week. • It was flowers that Kate gave Sally for her graduation last week. • It was Sally who Kate gave flowers to for her graduation last week. • It was for her graduation that Kate gave Sally flowers last week. • It was last week that Kate gave Sally flowers for her graduation. 3
What-clause + is/was + emphasized word/phrase The good service attracts customers. → What attracts customers is the good service. subject + do/does/did + base form of the verb (in the Present Simple, Past Simple, or Imperative) She eats cereal every morning. She does eat cereal every morning. Emphasizing the whole sentence What-clause + do/did/does + is/was + emphasized information You should speak to the manager about it. What you should do is (to) speak to the manager about it. Questions to emphasize a part of the sentence Is/Was it + emphasized word/phrase + that/who(m)/which/when… Is your car parked outside? Is it your car that is parked outside? Question word including the word ever…? (to express anger, admiration, concern, etc. ) What happened to them? They’re late. Whatever happened to them? They’re late.
