What would you do? The situation: After passing her teaching placement, a student comes to you because she’s feeling bad about something. In the last period of her placement, she had a pupil who just kept interrupting her lesson and she felt incapable of stopping him.
What would you do? The situation continued: The reason why the student is feeling bad, is because she started shouting at the interrupting pupil and she almost threw an eraser at him. The student was unable to stop the pupil from acting out, which got her so angry that she couldn’t control herself.
Empathy vs Sympathy • What’s the difference?
Empathy vs Sympathy • • Pointing out the ‘silver lining’ ‘at least’ advice from your POV: ‘I would do this or that if I were you’ feeling for someone
Empathy vs Sympathy Empathy • Step into other person’s shoes • Let go of your own POV • Don’t judge! Understand that there was an underlying driving force • Feeling with someone
Empathetic Listening Empathetically listening to someone is: • Listening while not holding on to your own frame of reference. • Clear your mind and be in the present with them. • Suspend all judgment and just feel with the other person.
