Quatrains • Four line stanzas that echo the simple rhythms of church hymns.
Slant rhymes • Words that do not EXACTLY rhyme. • Chill/Tulle
Figurative Language • Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. • When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are. Figurative language, in comparison, uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. Figurative language is very common in poetry, but is also used in prose and nonfiction writing as well. Types- Simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification
Imagery • Visually descriptive or figurative language, esp. in a literary work
Essential Truths • When you focus on life’s real meaning. • Love, loss, Joy, death
Personification • Giving non-human objects human like characteristics. • Example: The moon was smiling down on us.
Rhythm • Rhythm refers to the pattern of sounds made by varying the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem
Simile • A figure of speech that compares two things that have something in common, using like or as.
Metaphor • A figure of speech that compares two things directly, without using like or as.
Paradox • a statement whose two parts seem contradictory yet make sense with more thought. • Christ used paradox in his teaching: "They have ears but hear not. " Or in ordinary conversation, we might use a paradox, "Deep down he's really very shallow. " Paradox attracts the reader's or the listener's attention and gives emphasis.
Paradox Review • Paradox: a statement that seems to contradict itself but may nevertheless suggest an important truth. • Identify a paradox in “Success is counted sweetest”, “Much Madness is divinest Sense, ” and “My Life had stood-a Loaded Gun-. ” What truth does each paradox convey?
