Preparing for Emergencies in the Lab • Develop & know the plan • Know the locations of: – Safety equipment – Personal protective equipment – Response equipment, such as spill control materials • Train for all emergencies • Practice, practice
Emergency Response Personal Exposure • Don’t panic • Send for help – If you feel you cannot handle – If you need a respirator • Assist any injured or contaminated personnel – Injured persons are priority – Obtain medical attention • Notify supervisor 4. 4

Emergency Response Fire 1. Alert co-workers. 2. Close doors and pull fire alarm. 3. Call fire department and security desk at your location. 4. Use fire extinguisher if trained and fire is small. 5. Proceed to nearest exit. 6. Move away from building and await further instructions. 1. 5

Emergency Response Medical • Check the scene and victim: Is the scene safe, what happened, how many victims, help? • is their any Call for medical help if victim is: Unconscious, has trouble breathing, has chest pain/pressure, bleeding severely, has possible broken bones, has persistent pressure/pain in abdomen, is vomiting/passing blood, has seizures, headache or slurred speech. • Care for victim: If you are trained, provide CPR and first aid. Comfort victim until help arrives. 1. 5
Emergency Response Personal Exposure Spills on Clothing • Use safety shower; flush 15 min. • Quickly remove contaminated clothing, shoes, jewelry – Time is critical to prevent serious skin burns • Modesty must not delay removal of clothing; cut clothing off if necessary • Do not to spread contamination from clothing to skin or eyes 4. 4
Emergency Response Personal Exposure Eyes • Immediately flush w/ water for 15 min • Assist or get assistance during flushing • Hold or assist in holding eye lids open • Move eyeball around during flushing • Get medical attention 4. 4
Emergency Response Personal Exposure Skin • Flush immediately w/ flowing water > 15 min • Remove jewelry in exposed area • Wash w/ warm water & soap if no burn visible • Check MSDS/other information for delayed effects • Get medical attention 4. 4
Chemical Spills in the Lab • Chemical spills will happen • Know Your Chemicals • Take Steps to Prevent or Minimize Spills – Good Housekeeping – Secondary Containers – Order/Use/Store Minimum Amounts • Be Prepared for Emergencies
