Response can be improved with better, timely information • Knowing who is injured and where they are in the building injured get medical attention faster • Educators have emergency plans & procedures at their fingertips (they forget what to do, turnover, etc) • Non-school based police will find themselves responding to an emergency in a school building they’ve never set foot in–> building maps • Gives ICs/PIOs more information to be able to communicate.

Parent-student reunification is complex today • Many schools don’t even have a protocol for reunification. • Only about 68 percent of school districts have protocols to reunite children with their families after disaster strikes, according to the report from the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). • Even when they have a protocol, schools often do not practice/drill reunifications because it is too complex; EM makes it easier.

Indicators • The District Improvement Plan for upcoming year includes enhancements to school safety • The district has had a recent incident of some type (gas leak, shooting, intruder, hazmat issue in science lab, etc) • Board meeting agenda topics and/or meeting minutes indicate school safety is a priority • They have recently added additional SROs to schools • State funding/grants have been issued 9

Pre-meeting research for EM (Avoid asking the prospect anything you can find out on your own) • Does the district have it’s own police department or contract with local law enforcement? • Drill requirements and compliance (ideally put their drill requirements into DM before the demo) • Recent incidents in their district • School board meeting minutes and agendas • SRP/SRM adoption (see ilug web page) • Technology they currently use: notification systems (e. g. School Messenger), visitor management system (if any), SIS • Emergency plan & protocols • Look for areas of optimization– e. g. telephone tree can be eliminated/reduced by adding those people to the alert distribution list • Is there coordination between the school and local first responders such as firefighters and police, nearby hospitals, etc. , in planning for emergency situations? Are there provisions to maintain clear lines of communication in different emergency scenarios? 10
