EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT A disaster is any incident or event that disrupts the normal operation of Medical Center. To assist in a quick and efficient transition from normal to disaster operation, the hospital has developed a disaster plan which outlines general guidelines and department functions during emergency operations. There are two major categories of disaster: q Internal disasters are incidents or events that occur inside the facility which disrupt normal operation. Examples of an internal disaster include fire, bomb threat, or loss of a major utility system (water/electricity, etc). q External disasters are incidents or events that occur outside the facility which generate a large influx of patients in a short period of time. Examples of an external disaster include plane crashes, natural disasters (flood, earthquake, tornado, etc), civil disturbances, & bioterrorism. q Each department maintains a copy of the Emergency q Management Plan
