Embedding English and Maths Aims and Objectives for
Embedding English and Maths
Aims and Objectives for this Session Aim: To explore ways to embed Maths and English into your programme delivery Objectives: By the end of the session you will be able to: • Recognise and record opportunities for embedding English and Maths • Identify the codes to use on your planning documentation • List 6 opportunities to integrate Maths and/or English into a selected topic • Be able to locate relevant documentation on the VLE
Initial assessment Individually please answer the following questions: 1. Do you embed Maths and English into your current delivery? 2. Give an example of how you embed Maths? 3. Give an example of how you embed English?
• Research demonstrates that there are higher retention and success rates on embedded and contextualised courses. • This is the case across all levels, on average retention is 16% higher on embedded courses and success rates are 17% higher when embedding takes place. (IOE London 2014)
Responsibility • The Education Inspection Framework specifies the importance of building skills for future learning, employment and life in modern Britain. • Tutors should encourage learners to use subject-specific, professional and technical vocabulary well. • The curriculum should be sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and employment. This includes English and Maths where the opportunities arise.
Hampshire Achieves Quality Improvement Plan Post Ofsted Inspection April 2016 • For learners, an embedded approach can build and give value to the main course subject, build their confidence and encourage progression to English and maths qualifications • Tutors who deliver adult and community learning; apprenticeships; traineeships; and study programmes outside of formal functional skills delivery are required to embed English and maths where relevant opportunities arise. (full policy available on VLE) Ofsted Inspection February 2018 • Tutors are confident and integrate English and mathematics into their subject content well (P 3) • In many instances tutors take the opportunity to incorporate relevant and appropriate mathematics and English skills development activities into lessons. This is very effective in motivating learners to improve their knowledge and skills (P 5) • Learners gain English and mathematics skills and qualifications to prepare them for work or FE (P 6)
Embedding English Codes English codes are as follows: ER= English Reading EWGC= English Writing Grammar and Composition (structure) EWP= English Writing Punctuation EWS= English Writing Spelling ESLC= English Speaking Listening and Communication

Within ACL the opportunities to embed skills will often occur naturally Cookery: • English – reading recipes, researching and reading healthy eating magazines and books, planning a menu and writing a list of ingredients, discussing recipes, talking, listening and asking questions. • Maths – calculating weights and costs of ingredients, measuring amounts, estimating calorific values, cooking times and temperatures. • ICT – using a word processor to create a menu, researching relevant websites, e-mailing other learners, creating and giving presentations using an electronic whiteboard, creating a podcast, making videos and taking photos of finished products and uploading them to a virtual learning environment, website or electronic portfolio.
Activity 1 – Cooking session Plan On the session plan provided, please enter the appropriate codes in the functional skills column, of any examples of where you consider Maths and English can be embedded. • Discuss findings
Activity 2 • Reflect on and discuss a specific lesson you have taught in your own subject area and identify 6 opportunities where you can now use Maths and English codes. • Explain how embedding can take place. • Be prepared to feedback to whole group.
