Embedded Sentences Embedded sentences are the sentences where an embedded clause is used within the main clause of the sentence. The embedded clause will be separated by using commas.
Learning about embedded clauses can help the students write more informative and engaging sentences. This skill can also help them improve how, when, and why they deliver information.
This activity will be helpful to introduce embedded clauses to the learners while giving them an opportunity to practice new knowledge.
• Embedded clauses must contain a subject and a verb. • Embedded clauses are placed within the main clause of a sentence. • There is usually a comma before and after an embedded clause. • Embedded clauses are used to give additional information about or add weight to the main clause.
Examples – Janey, who is the best student in class, was selected to represent the school at the national spelling bee finals. – Kiki's dog, who is very fat, has been missing since Saturday. – My friend, who has settled in Australia, is coming this week.
Point out the embedded clauses in the above examples, and ask students to come up and write additional embedded clause examples on the board. You'll also want to mention that if an embedded clause is removed, the remaining sentence should still be grammatically correct.
