KEPLER’S RELUCTANT CONCLUSION: Planets do not orbit in circles… Planets orbit in “flattened circles” or ellipses.
KEPLER’S LAWS OF PLANETARY MOTION
KEPLER’S FIRST LAW All planets orbit in ellipses. The Sun is at the focus of each planet’s elliptical orbit.
KEPLER’S SECOND LAW This law is known as the law of equal areas, and it says that planets sweep out equal amounts of area in equal amounts of time. Planets pick up speed as they get closer to the object they orbit. http: //highered. mheducation. com/olcweb/cgi/pluginpop. cgi? it=swf: : 800: : 600: : /sites/dl/free/0072482621/78778/ Kepler_Nav. swf: : Keplers+Second+Law+Interactive
KEPLER’S THIRD LAW Kepler’s third law compares the orbital period of a planet (how long it takes to orbit one time) to the average orbital radius of that planet (how far, on average, it is away from the Sun). Kepler noticed that there seemed to be a relationship between how long it took planets to orbit and their average distance. Kepler found that the ratio of the orbital period squared to the average orbital radius cubed was equal for all planets.

NEWTON’S EXPLANATION OF ORBITS
THINGS THAT ORBIT Currently, planet Earth has over 2, 000 manmade satellites orbiting.
THINGS THAT ORBIT Currently, planet Earth has over 2, 000 man-made satellites orbiting. The International Space Station has been orbiting the Earth for 17 years, and has had humans inside continually for the past 15 years.
THINGS THAT ORBIT Currently, planet Earth has approximately 2, 465 man -made satellites orbiting. The International Space Station has been orbiting the Earth for 16 years, and has had humans inside continually for the past 14 years.
THINGS THAT ORBIT Currently, planet Earth has over 2, 000 man-made satellites orbiting. The International Space Station has been orbiting the Earth for 17 years, and has had humans inside continually for the past 15 years. There additional objects orbiting the Sun in what’s called the Lagrangian points. These points are where satellites are being pulled equally by the Sun and Earth to stay in the same spot, following Earth around the Sun.
