Background She was born to a car salesman and a working mother who got divorced when Ellen was a teenager She was very sheltered and knew nothing of what was going on in the world. In fact, she was so sheltered that she didn’t even know the Vietnam War was happening. Growing up, she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian but didn’t think she was book smart enough. So, she waited tables, sold vacuum cleaners, painted houses, and worked as a legal secretary. She also grew up as a Christian scientists are not allowed to take any type of medicine
Background Ellen became a comedian after she had to do a public speech and became so nervous she used humor to get through it. Ellen was a huge hit and was asked to do stand-up comedy. However, her dad thought her comedian career would be a disaster and tried convincing her to sell cars just like him. Even so, she began doing comedy at a local coffeehouse and her career began when Johnny Carson asked her to be on his show. She was the very first female comedian to sit down with Johnny Carson and was beyond nervous that she couldn’t even look him in the eye. Afterwards, Ellen got her own sitcom show and it started successfully That is, until the company found out she was gay.
Background Once the news came out, she was fired because the producer feared what the news would do to the show. Ellen wasn’t hired for three years but she said it was the best thing that has ever happened to her Eventually, the producer decided to rehire her and make her character gay. Ellen received letters from people who were also gay and were considering suicide but didn’t because of Ellen. However, she also received death notes from people but that didn’t stop her from telling the world who she really was. The main reason was because, when she really looked at herself, she saw a lot of shame for who she was and asked herself “why should I be ashamed for who I am? ” Eventually, she got “The Ellen Show” and it's been very successful
Practices Comedy She’s a successful comedian which kickstarted her career Gay marriage Feels strongly about and is very open about it She’s not ashamed of who she is and doesn’t care what people think of her anymore She believed she found what real success is because of what she experienced. Exploring new things She loves exploring new things and doesn’t like being tied down in the same familiar place She believes that there is something better ahead and keeps on moving
Values Freedom Cannot stand being tied down to one place which is why she’s always moving She likes to do everything in a big way She is considered non-religious because she thinks religion ties her down She believes religion is based off of what happens after death However, she believes in God and that he is everywhere, even in trees and plants Equality Treating people how you want to be treated Everyone is equal and shouldn’t be judged She doesn’t believe God is judgmental In fact, she believes that Heaven and Hell is what you make of it now Kindness Loves being kind and constantly makes promises she tries to fulfill She constantly tries to stay positive and shows compassion to those in need She risked being threatened in order to encourage other people like her She believes in helping others and explains haw Finding Dory is an example because sea creatures who didn’t know Dory helped her find her way which is also how she slams Trump about travel ban
Worldview She is considered non-religious but does have her own beliefs I think she’s a mix of Christianity and Modernism Christianity because she believes in God but not all of his teachings Modernism because she used rational thinking in some parts and believed there is a purpose in life and it should be viewed objectively She says, “My dad is still a Christian Scientist. My mom is not, and I am not. But I believe in God, and that there’s a higher power and an intelligence bigger than us and that we can rely on. It’s not just us, thinking we are the ones in control of everything. That idea gives me support.
