What is Literacy?
What is literacy/discourse? o Gee says, “A socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or social network. ” o What are some of examples of a literacy or discourse? (certain occupations, nationality, ethnic group, gender, class, student, barista, sports, club, social network, technology etc. )
A simple example… o ROCK CLIMBING LITERACY (video) o In the rock climbing culture people tend to have the same interests as far as good climbing gear to buy, a certain obsession with “hard climbs”, and the ability to speak the climbing language. Before you start a climb you must talk to your belayer and tell them that you are ready to climb. Here is a list of commands that are important to follow.
Rock Climbing cont. o Climber: On Belay (this means am I tied into the rope and the belay gear) o Belayer: Belay is on o Climber: Climbing (I am starting to climb, so watch me) o Belayer: Climb on o Climber: Got me? (this means either I am getting ready to do a hard move or I am ready to come down)
Commands cont. o Belayer: Gotcha’ (belayer tightens hold on the o o rope and prepares to lower the climber by feeding the rope through the belay device) Climber: Coming down (climber is repelling down the rock face to the ground) Belayer: Okay, coming down Climber: Off Belay (climber is on the ground and is ready to let the belayer climb now) Belayer: Belay is off (both can relax now)
Rock Climbing cont. o This is the general dialogue that should occur between the partners when they are climbing. There are other terms that climbers use: Beaners (carabineer SP), cracks, face, nudges, nuts, pitches, bolts, top rope, approach, ascent, descent, anchor in, fist jam, slab, layback, cams, pro (protection) and then the level of climbs from 5’ 6 -5’ 11 ABCD.
Your Literacy as part of your schema On your own… o Think of your own cultural groups or literacies that you belong to. o What language/isms do you have that pertain to that particular group? o What are some of the behaviors that are present in your group? o Are there any “Do’s and Don’ts”
NCTE says o The NCTE says it’s a collection of cultural and communicative practices shared among members of particular groups. As society and technology change, so does literacy.
Summary o Read through Canvas and the syllabus. o Look at the Funds of Knowledge assignment. o The assignments will be updated more this week. o Read Session 1 and 2 and be prepared to discuss in class. o Discussion Posts 1 and 2 o Have service learning completely lined up.
Start here for the rest of Session 1 lecture
What might literacy look like in the classroom? o Watch this video, how might these literacies/discourses be used to teach our students? What literacies do we need to know about our students in order to teach them? How do we teach academic literacy? How might we assess it? o http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Wn 0_Hkvxk. U
School and Academic Literacy Think about …then answer the next slide’s questions o How the academic literacy instruction is influenced by the context in which lessons are taught. o How the demands of literacy differ across subject areas and their assessments. o What critical literacy/thinking skills are needed for academic literacy. o How to critically evaluate a textbook for factors which impact readability, usability, and interest.
What about you? See handout on types of learners in session 1 page on Canvas. Include in Post #1. o What are some ways that you learn best? Visually, Verbally, Kinesthetically? o How were you accommodated in school (or not accommodated) in school to help your particular learning style? o How were you assessed in school? What kinds of assessments were you given and what worked and didn’t work well for you? o How did those assessments shape the way you saw yourself as a learner?
Teaching issues… o How might the way you were taught and assessed trickle down to your students? Sometimes we teach the way we were taught so how might knowing yourself as a learner make you a better teacher?
This course will… o Show you how different types of knowing and being in the world (epistemologies* see notes) o Epistemology is the way in which you come to know the world through your beliefs of how the world works and your ideas about truth. It’s like a lens on how you see the world. o It will also show you how assessments can be designed to capture a variety of epistemological beliefs. We will start with yours in session 2.
