Theatre During the Era • In the 16 th century, all social classes enjoyed theatre • Elizabethan theatre and Plays banned from London City Limits
Famous Elizabethan Playwrights • Christopher Marlow (1564 1593) • Francis Beaumont (1584 - 1616) • John Fletcher (1579 - 1625) • Thomas Middleton (1580 - 1627) • Thomas Kyd (1558 - 1594) • William Shakespeare (1564 1616)
Actors • The actors in all Elizabethan plays were men and young boys in masks • Women were not allowed to preform onstage
Costumes for female characters Men wore women's costumes • Those costumes required a man to wear a chemise and a coreset under their costumes • Stockings, pantalets, an underskirt, and a stomacher was worn over those and under the gown •
Costumes for male characters • Men wore skirts and stockings • They wore many layers • Breeches, a doublet, and a high collar were worn as well
Theatre Architecture and Scenery • Theaters were circular or octangular having 8 to 24 sides • Amphitheaters had tile roofs • Different materials like nails, timber, flint stones, plaster, and thatched roofs were used for construction
Audience members and cost • About 3, 000 people were in the crowds • Nobles would have paid for the better seats in the Lord's rooms paying 5 for the privilege • Rich nobles could watch the play from a chair set on the side of the Globe stage itself
Audience members and cost • The Commoners, called the Groundling, would have stood in theatre pit and paid 1 entrance fee • They put 1 penny in a box at theatre entrance aka the 'Box Office'

Extra facts • Queen Elizabethan never had children • No true Elizabethan Theatres until 1576 • They used to perform in courtyards of inns • The church started to object Elizabethan performances • They believed that the plays were becoming violent and referencing offending topics
