ELIXIR Training: Professional skills for managing and exploiting data Mission: to establish an interactive ELIXIR-wide training community across all member states that coherently delivers ELIXIR-related training
ELIXIR Training: Professional skills for managing and exploiting data Mission: to establish an interactive ELIXIR-wide training community across all member states that coherently delivers ELIXIR-related training 1. Develop and deliver training in selected gap areas for: • Researchers (Tt. R) • Developers and Infrastructure operators (Tt. D) • Trainers (Tt. T)
ELIXIR Training: Professional skills for managing and exploiting data Mission: to establish an interactive ELIXIR-wide training community across all member states that coherently delivers ELIXIR-related training 1. Develop and deliver training in selected gap areas for: • Researchers (Tt. R) • Developers and Infrastructure operators (Tt. D) • Trainers (Tt. T) 2. Build sustainable Training Infrastructure • Technical: Te. SS Training portal, e-Learning platform, Virtual coffee room , Best practices guidelines, Metrics • Community
ELIXIR Training is a Community Effort • ELIXIR Training builds on and complements national training activities in 21 ELIXIR Nodes • Other collaborators Em. Tra. G (metabolomics)
Training events and resources for: • Researchers • Developers & infrastructure operators • Trainers
Recent history of ELIXIR Training
Train the Researcher & the Developer 24 workshops (6 of them as synchronous e-learning) • Software and Data Carpentry • HPC • Python, Unix/Linux command line • Workflow tools (Galaxy, Chipster /RNAseq ) • Use Case community driven trainings: • • Variant analysis (with the Rare Diseases) • Genome assembly & annotation (with Plants, Marine metagenomics, Capacity Building) • Metagenomics (with Marine metagenomics) AAI Workshop = e-learning course
Train the Trainer • Objectives: • To deliver a framework with associated materials and guidelines for training new trainers across ELIXIR • To build a highly-skilled and coherent community of mindful instructors
Train the Trainer • Teaching elements: • Principles of learning and how they apply to training • Training techniques for enhancing learner engagement and participation • Designing engaging sessions, materials and courses • Assessment and feedback in training and developing reflective practice • Seven pilot workshops across 5 Nodes, where 53 trainers from 12 Nodes were trained
We are building • Training infrastructure • Community
Te. SS – ELIXIR Training Portal • Platform to disseminate and discover training materials and events • Aggregating information from ELIXIR nodes and various 3 rdparty content providers • July 2017: • 234 upcoming events • 793 training materials • 40 content providers https: //tess. elixir-europe. org/

The Virtual Coffee Room • Virtual Community Space for developers & infrastructure operators • A communication platform http: //cafe. elixir. ut. ee/
e-Learning Platform Ee. LP • Ee. LP: https: //elixir. mf. uni-lj. si • White paper published: Defining a lingua franca for the ELIXIR/GOBLET e-learning ecosystem https: //zenodo. org/record/166378
Assessing training quality, good practices and impact • Developed: • • Set of metrics (KPI) • Overall satisfaction • Participant numbers • Gender • Career level • Employment sector • Country of employment • Where did the participant see the event being advertised • Would they be happy to be contacted in the future (long term feedback) Standard feedback survey
Sample feedback results so far (9 Nodes, >100 events)
Training Metadata Standards A minimum set of descriptors for training materials - under review by ELIXIR members, GOBLET and Bioschemas Hackathons hosted so far: • NGS training material curation (2015, 2016) • Galaxy training materials reusability (2017) • Descriptors were applied to existing sets of materials and refined.
Competencies – inspired by the ISCB work • Aim to develop, refine and extend current competencies to cover new and emerging fields. • Have been used to define core competencies in • Is currently used to develop core competencies in their field of data science by • Will be used by ELIXIR to describe training events and learning paths with the involvement of the industry
Promoting computing skills • Collaboration agreement with Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry Foundations to: • provide Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry workshops • produce common training materials • train SWC/DC instructors • Paper published: Developing a strategy for computational lab skills training through Software and Data Carpentry: Experiences from the ELIXIR Pilot action (F 1000).
