Elements of Narrative • Setting: time and place in which the story takes place • Plot: It’s the organization of events and characters in a work of fiction. It’s the plan or design of events to achieve artistic effects.
Plot and story E. M. Forster gives the following example to explain the difference between plot and story • «The king died and then the queen died» is story • «The king died and then the queen died because of her grief» is plot. According to Forster in plot , the emphasis is on the causality (1990, p. 87).
– Sub-plot (underplot): A secondary or minor plot in a work of fiction. – The plot structure may be triangular, circular or linear
Elements of Narrative Point of view is the position of the narrator. «Who tells the narrative? » A-Participant a- participant as a major character b- participant as a minor character B- Non-Participant a-Omniscient b- Selective omniscient (limited omniscient) c- Objective (camera-like)
