Elements of Music Form - Structure
Form ▫ Definition: Form is the overall structure or organization of the piece.
Terminology for Popular music • Hook – a musical idea that catches your ear and gets you interested in the song. This must happen at the beginning – if it happens at all – but can return later in the song. • Introductions (intros) • Verse - the words that the writer uses to give the story. It contains the details of the story, the events, images and emotions that the writer wishes to express. • Chorus - the part that everyone wants to sing along to – it is the memorable section. In this song, the verse and chorus alternate from one to the other, until the story progresses.
Terminology for Popular music • Bridge – a contrasting section of the music used to reflect on the earlier portions of the song or to prepare the listener for the climax of the song. In order for it to be a bridge is HAS to be different – otherwise it’s just considered an instrumental break or • Instrumental – a break in the song without words or singing. It should be the same music and background as the rest of the song, but now one of the instruments is playing it as a solo. • Endings (outros)
“All Your Life” The Band Perry Would you walk to the edge of the ocean Just to fill my jar with sand Just in case I get the notion To let it run through my hand Let it run through my hand Well, I don't want the whole world The sun, the moon, and all their light I just want to be the only girl You love all your life Lately I've been writing desperate love songs Mostly I sing them to the wall. You could be the center piece of my obsession If you would notice me, I Oh yeah Would you catch a couple thousand fireflies Yeah, put them in a lamp to light my world All dressed up in a tux and bowtie Hand deliver to a lonely girl To a lonely, lonely girl Well I don't want the whole world The sun, the moon, and all their light I just want to be the only girl You love all your life Life Yeah
What if there are no words? • Form in classical or instrumental music is described like poetry; A, B, C, B, A, etc. • To figure out the form of this type of music, use the letters and LISTEN!! Listen to just one more… “Ring of Fire” June Carter-Cash, performed by Johnny Cash Love is a burning thing And it makes a fiery ring Bound by wild desire I fell into a ring of fire I fell into a burning ring of fire I went down, down and the flames went higher And it burns, burns, the ring of fire The taste of love is sweet When hearts like ours meet I fell for you like a child Oh, but the fire went wild I fell into a burning ring of fire I went down, down and the flames went higher And it burns, burns, the ring of fire The ring of fire And it burns, the ring of fire The ring of fire https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=It 7107 EL Qv.
