CONFLICT • Conflict is the struggle of opposing forces in a story. It is what creates the drama and action that moves the story from beginning to conclusion. Every story has conflict; without conflict, there is no story.
MAN VS. SELF (INTERNAL) • Internal conflict is another common conflict in literature. Lady Mac. Beth • This is often portrayed by a character fighting against his/her own conscience or moral beliefs, or struggling to make a difficult decision.
MAN VS. MAN (EXTERNAL) • The conflict between two characters is generally considered a conflict between one man and another man. This is the most common and most obvious literary conflict.
MAN VS. NATURE (EXTERNAL) • Man Struggling with a Boa Constrictor, Study for Liboya Serpent Seizing its Prey, c. 1803 • This conflict is portrayed when man fights against the forces of nature. This can be represented in several ways, possibly as man fighting an animal, or a natural disaster.
MAN VS. SOCIETY (EXTERNAL) Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat. • Man vs. Society is external and is the kind of conflict you find whenever man stands up to the society he lives in.
