What is art? • Labor intensive visual communication intended for an audience. – Beautiful – Skillful – Meaningful/Provocative – Expressive

Does art matter? Why art? • To be well-rounded, educated and informed. To have taste.

Is there “bad” art? What does good art look like? What does bad art look like? • Absolutely! If something does not possess one or more of the four qualities, it is bad. • That is your opinion. Give an example.

Does art have to be beautiful? • No. First of all, beauty is subjective. If it has a message or took skill to create, it is also art. A lot of good art is “ugly. ”

What makes someone an artist? • Someone who creates art and identifies themselves as an artist. A professional artist should treat making art like a job and sell or show their work.

What is the point of art? • To express and communicate ideas. These ideas can be simple or complex.

The Elements of Art and Principles of Design

An element is a basic part of something in its simplest form. There are 7 elements in art.

Line, shape, form, texture, value, color, and space are the basic elements we find in all artwork.

The Elements of Art The building blocks or ingredients of art.

LINE Ansel Adams A mark with length and direction. A continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point. Gustave Caillebotte

SHAPE An enclosed area defined and determined by other art elements; 2 dimensional. Joan Miro

TEXTURE The surface quality or "feel" of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc. Textures may be actual or implied.
