Elements and Principles of Design MEDIA ARTS
Elements of Design Line: This photograph is eye catching because it uses wooden pillars to carry the viewers eye across the picture. Lines are the main element of design in this image.
Elements of Deign Line and Depth: This photograph uses lines to create depth in the image. Your eye is immediately drawn to the vanishing point.
Elements of design Shape and Value: The rounded stones in this picture create a pattern like appearance. The value and contrast which is a principle of design between grey and white makes this image interesting and eye catching. Shape and value are used as the main elements of design.
Elements of Design Shape and Texture: The rings in this wood create a repetitive shape which brings the eye to the center of the image. Repetition is a principle of design. The texture in this photograph is rough and uneven which is accentuated with the shadowing. Shape and texture make this photograph visually appealing.
Elements of Design Texture: The peeling paint in this picture creates a crinkly texture that is broken up across the photograph. The element of texture is used to make this image unique and dimensional.
Elements of Design Colour: The complementary colours blue and orange are used in this photo to make it visually appealing. Also the boldness of the colours catches the viewer’s eye and brings it from the background to the foreground.
Elements of Design Colour: The complementary colours red and green are used to make this photo pleasing to the eye. Rule of thirds which is a type of balance in the principles of design is used to off set the single red poppy and make it eye catching and the focal point. Colour creates a contrast which is one of the principles of design in this photograph.
Elements of Design Value and Line: Value is used in this photograph by making the foreground dark and background bright. Lines are used in the tracks which pulls the eye across the photograph.
Elements of Design Depth and Shape: Depth is created by the “layered” appearance of the mountains from the foreground to the background. The mountains are the shape in the photograph and use the principle repetition. Depth and Shape are the main elements of design in this photo.
Principles of Design MEDIA ARTS
Principles of Design Movement: Movement is created in this image by the blurred effect on the edges of the picture and slight focus on the vanishing point. Lines which are an element of design are also used to carry the viewers eye to the center of the image.
Principles of Design Movement: Movement is created in this image by the photographer focusing on the person in the foreground. Due to this the subway in the background which is moving quickly becomes a blur.
Principles of Design Repetition: The repetition of colour, shape, and line elements of design make this photo interesting and eye catching. The viewer’s eye it pulled across the photograph following the pattern.
Principles of Design Repetition: The repetition of the arches use the elements of design depth and shape. The interesting shape of the arches catches the viewers eye and depth is created from the arches decreasing in size as they get farther away. Repetition is the main principle of design used in this photograph.
Principles of Design Rhythm and Balance: The asymmetrical balance of the birds on the wire makes the photograph visually interesting. The rhythm makes the viewer focus on the center of the image where the taller bird is.
Principles of Design Rhythm: The viewers eye is pulled across this picture starting at the bottom where the water droplets are in focus to the sides and top where the image is blurred. The rhythm of the water droplets in this photo makes it unique and intriguing.
Principles of Design Unity: Unity is created in this image by using all the elements of design: line, shape, colour, texture, value, and depth. The elements fit together and compliment one another to make the photograph complete.
Principles of Design Unity: The photographer created unity in this photograph by emphasizing certain elements of design such as shape. This fills the image and makes the viewer step back and take in the entire picture instead of specific areas.
Principles of Design Contrast: Contrast is created in this photograph by using the element texture and value. The fog is soft and light and the stone is hard, rough, and dark in appearance. Therefore contrast is the main principle of design in this photo.
Principles of Design Contrast: The element of shape is used in this picture with the round sphere reflecting the tall rectangular prism sky scrapers in contrast. This creates interest in the photograph.
Principles of Design Emphasis: Emphasis is created on the strawberry in this photograph by keeping the background simple and adding the red as a pop of colour. This pulls the viewers eye at first glance to the strawberry.
Principles of Design Emphasis: The sunflower is emphasized in this photo because the background is dark and blurred. This forces your eye to the bright yellow of the sunflower. The element of design colour was used to achieve this.
Principles of Design Balance (symmetrical): The shape of the chairs helps to accentuate the balance and symmetry in this photograph.
Principles of Design Balance (Radial): Radial balance is shown in this photograph by the winding staircase taken out of a birds eye view perspective creating a circular appearance. The elements of line and depth are also used in this image to created a swirl similar to an optical allusion.
Principles of Design Balance (Rule of Thirds): The deer is the focal point in this photograph and rule of thirds is used the accentuate the animal but keep the photograph interesting and different. Rule of thirds is the main principle design in this picture.
