Elementary Mathematics Updates Presented by: The Department of K-12 Curriculum
Agenda • Standards Information • Assessment information • Test Item Specifications • Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Resources
Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS) § Students are building their number sense and fact fluency § Students need a strong foundation because each math concept builds on another one § Students should be taught how the concepts are connected – there is a progression within and across grades § Students need to understand math processes and will be asked to discuss and prove their understanding § Students solve problems in real-world situations
Formative Assessment: Teachers Collect A Variety of Evidence • Teacher Observations During Turn and Talk During Manipulative Work During Number Talks Discussions (Whole/Small Group) • Activities/Assignments • Conferencing • • • Written Assessments • Quick Check • Ticket In/Exit Tickets • CPALMs Formative Assessments • Reflections in Notebook • Performance Tasks • • • Rubrics Student Record Forms Manipulative Work Checklist Authentic Tasks Projects • Formal Assessments • Florida Standards Quizzes (FSQ) • Unit Standards Assessments (USA)
Formative Vs. Summative Assessment • Formative Assessment – the cook tastes the food • Summative Assessment – the guests taste the food • Every assessment is formative until the FSA and/or the end of the year • Adjustments are made throughout the year so students can reach mastery of grade level standards • Formative Assessment is ongoing to look ahead and plan • Summative Assessment is given at the end to look back
Formative Assessment: Teachers Monitor Progress towards MASTERY • During a Unit of Instruction, teachers are designing activities and routines that will: § give students opportunities to show mastery or progress toward mastery § give students feedback on how they can achieve mastery § give teachers data about what students know and what they need to work on § give teachers information about how to adjust teaching to meet students’ needs

What is the District Doing to Support Students? • Mathematics Cadres • Florida Standards Quizzes • Unit Standards Assessments • Problems of the Day • Number Talks • i. Ready
Number Talks • Classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally • Record different strategies to allow students to see how their classmates solved computational problems
Number Talks What number plus 367 equals 500? What did you do to solve it?
6. 6: Model with Arrays Select all the equations that represent the array. q 2 + 8 = 10 q 2 x 8 = 16 q 16 ÷ 2 = 8 q 8 x 2 = 16 q 16 – 8 = 2 q 16 ÷ 8 = 2 Problems Of The Day MAFS. 3. OA. 1. 3
FSQ (Florida Standards Quiz) USA (Unit Standards Assessment) § These assessments are some of the many data points that the teacher is collecting § Teachers look at test data by individual standards and not as an overall score § The reports that teachers can send home give information by standard
Florida Standards Quizzes • Used to collect formative data to drive instruction • Can help provide insight into helping create small groups • Created in FSA format

Computer-based Testing Practice § Florida Standards Assessment Practice Tests for Grade 3, 4, and 5 (www. fsassessments. org) § District-made Grade 3, 4, and 5 Practice (OLA) On-line Assessments § District-made Computer Based Practice Simulation (on the District website and available to teachers) § District- and teacher-made tests with Technology Enhanced Items § Ten. Marks (free account at www. tenmarks. com) § IXL (limited free questions at www. ixl. com) § Opportunities to use a work folder to solve a computer-based problem

Homework Help Cheat Sheet To Develop a Growth Mindset… DO DON’T Tell your child that anyone can succeed in math. Say, “I’m not a math person, ” or “I was never good at math. ” Praise your child when you see hard work, effort, and perseverance paying off. Dwell on your child’s natural intelligence. See failure as a chance to learn. Go crazy if he fails (or #s) a test. Find out the teacher’s homework policy: “I don’t get it!” 1. 2. 3. • How long should each subject’s homework take? • What if it is consistently taking longer? • What should I do if my child does not understand how to complete the homework? • Does the teacher prefer that your child complete it at all costs? e. g. a Online Resources Questions to ask when your child says, 4. 5. What is the problem about? 1. Think Central: www. k 6. thinkcentral. com 2. Learn. Zillion: learnzillion. com 3. What did you learn in math class today? Khan Academy: www. khanacademy. org 4. You.
